Question 1

What is the sunniest time of year in Sydney?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Sydney is spring, from September to November, which delivered the brightest months of 2025. November topped the year with **303.2 hours of sunshine** (about 10.1 hours per day), followed closely by September with **299.9 hours** (roughly 10.0 hours per day).

Across the full spring period in 2025, Sydney recorded **879.7 hours of sunshine** over the three months, averaging close to 293 hours per month, or about 9.7 hours of sun each day. These months also stayed comfortably mild, with mean temperatures rising from 16.6°C (61.9°F) in September to 20.1°C (68.2°F) in November.

Spring was dry as well as bright: October saw just 29.0 mm (1.1 in) of rain and November only 37.8 mm (1.5 in), the two lowest rainfall totals of the year. By contrast, the dimmest stretches of 2025 came in late autumn and winter, with May receiving only 185.7 hours of sunshine and August 192.5 hours.

For visitors and locals planning outdoor activities, this makes the September-to-November window the most reliable time to enjoy Sydney's harbour, beaches, and coastal walks. The combination of long sunny days, low rainfall, and pleasant temperatures means spring offers Sydney's best balance of sunshine and comfortable weather across the 2025 calendar year.

Question 2

What were the temperature extremes in Sydney in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Sydney's temperature extremes in 2025 ranged from a high of **36.6°C (97.9°F)** down to a low of **3.4°C (38.1°F)**, giving the city an annual temperature span of about 33.2°C (59.8°F).

The hottest peak of 36.6°C (97.9°F) was recorded in October 2025, an unusually warm start to the southern spring. Sydney's coldest reading of 3.4°C (38.1°F) came in July 2025, during the depth of the Southern Hemisphere winter (June to August).

On a monthly basis, the warmest period was the summer (December to February), with February 2025 averaging 22.2°C (72.0°F). The coolest month was June 2025, averaging just 11.6°C (52.9°F). Across the full 2025 calendar year, Sydney's overall average temperature settled at 17.9°C (64.2°F).

A few practical takeaways for Sydney's climate:

- **Mild overall:** Despite the wide extremes, no month averaged below 11°C (52°F), so deep cold is rare.
- **Warm shoulder seasons:** Spring and autumn days can still spike above 35°C (95°F), as October showed.
- **Comfortable nights:** Even in winter, lows generally stayed above freezing near the coast.

These figures confirm that Sydney enjoys a temperate, oceanic climate where genuine cold is uncommon and summer heat is warm rather than extreme. Visitors planning a trip in 2025 could expect pleasant conditions for most of the year, with the main extremes being occasional hot spells in spring and summer rather than winter chills.

Question 3

Which months are the wettest in Sydney?

Accepted Answer

The wettest month in Sydney in 2025 was August, which recorded 251.1 mm (9.9 in) of rainfall — more than double the monthly average for the year.

Sydney saw substantial rain spread across several months in 2025, but a clear top three stand out. After August, the next wettest months were May with 178.0 mm (7.0 in) and January with 155.2 mm (6.1 in). April was also notably wet at 140.5 mm (5.5 in), while October was the driest month of the year with just 29.0 mm (1.1 in). Across all of 2025, Sydney received a total of 1,318.4 mm (51.9 in) of precipitation, averaging roughly 109.9 mm (4.3 in) per month.

The wet months in Sydney also tended to be the more humid ones, with average humidity climbing to around 76–79% from January through May and again in August. By contrast, the drier spring stretch of September through November stayed lower, between 62% and 65%.

For visitors and residents planning around Sydney's weather, these 2025 figures suggest packing rain gear if travelling in late summer to autumn (August through May), when downpours were heaviest. The driest, most settled conditions arrived in mid-spring, making October and November the safest bets for outdoor events and sightseeing with minimal rainfall interruptions.

Question 4

Which months are the windiest in Sydney?

Accepted Answer

**January is the windiest month in Sydney**, with average wind speeds of 16.6 km/h (10.3 mph) in 2025, while May was the calmest at 12.8 km/h (8.0 mph). Overall, Sydney is a relatively gentle-breeze city, averaging just 14.2 km/h (8.8 mph) across the full year.

Looking at the 2025 data, the windiest months in Sydney were:

- **January:** 16.6 km/h (10.3 mph)
- **July:** 15.4 km/h (9.6 mph)
- **March:** 14.9 km/h (9.3 mph)

What stands out most is how stable Sydney's wind conditions are. The gap between the windiest month (January) and the calmest month (May) was only 3.8 km/h (2.4 mph) in 2025, so there is no dramatic "windy season" the way many coastal cities experience.

The mid-year months stayed close to the annual average, with June through August holding around 14.4–15.4 km/h (8.9–9.6 mph). Spring months such as October and November were among the gentlest, both averaging 13.5 km/h (8.4 mph).

For visitors, this means wind is rarely a deciding factor when planning a trip to Sydney. Even in the breezier early-year period, average speeds stay in the light-breeze range, comfortable for harbour walks, beach days, and outdoor dining. If you prefer the calmest conditions, the autumn-into-late-spring stretch from May to November offers Sydney's steadiest, lightest winds.

Question 5

How much does the temperature vary between summer and winter in Sydney?

Accepted Answer

Sydney has a mild, moderate temperature range, with average temperatures swinging about 9.4°C (around 17°F) between summer and winter in 2025. As a Southern Hemisphere city, Sydney's warmest months fall in summer (December to February) and its coolest in winter (June to August).

During summer 2025 (January, February and December 2025), Sydney averaged 21.6°C (70.9°F), while winter 2025 (June to August 2025) averaged just 12.3°C (54.1°F). February was the warmest month overall at a mean of 22.2°C (72.0°F), and June was the coolest at 11.6°C (52.9°F) — a comfortable spread of 10.6°C (19.1°F) between the warmest and coolest months.

Looking at the extremes within these monthly figures, Sydney's monthly readings in 2025 ranged from a low of 3.4°C (38.1°F) in July up to a high of 36.6°C (97.9°F) in October. The full-year average temperature settled at a temperate 17.9°C (64.2°F).

This relatively narrow seasonal swing is what gives Sydney its reputation for year-round livability. Winters rarely turn truly cold, so heavy coats are seldom needed, while summers stay warm rather than extreme. For visitors, it means almost any month is suitable for travel, with the gentle transition seasons of autumn and spring offering particularly pleasant, stable conditions.
