Question 1

How much does the temperature vary in Calgary throughout the year?

Accepted Answer

Calgary has one of the largest temperature ranges of any major Canadian city, swinging roughly 62°C (112°F) between its coldest and hottest readings in 2025. This wide variation reflects Calgary's high-elevation (1,072 m / 3,517 ft) continental climate, where Chinook winds can lift winter temperatures dramatically within hours.

The extremes in 2025 tell the story clearly:

- **Hottest reading:** 32.2°C (90.0°F) in July
- **Coldest reading:** -30.2°C (-22.4°F) in February
- **Annual range:** about 62.4°C (112°F)

The seasonal contrast is just as striking. August was the warmest month on average at 17.7°C (63.9°F), while February was the coldest at -13.1°C (8.4°F) — a swing of nearly 31°C (55°F) in monthly mean temperatures. Across the full year, Calgary's average temperature settled at around 5.1°C (41.2°F).

What makes Calgary unusual is how much temperatures move within a single month. February 2025 alone ranged from a frigid -30.2°C (-22.4°F) low to a mild 14.3°C (57.7°F) high — a 44.5°C (80°F) intramonth swing driven largely by Chinooks.

For visitors and residents, this means packing for extremes year-round. Even in winter, a sudden Chinook can turn a deep freeze into a thaw, so layered clothing and flexibility are essential when planning outdoor activities in Calgary.

Question 2

What is the sunniest time of year in Calgary?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Calgary is late summer and early autumn, with **August 2025** being the brightest month at 364.6 hours of sunshine — roughly 11.8 hours of sun per day.

Calgary recorded a remarkable 2,543.7 hours of sunshine across all of 2025, averaging about 7.0 hours per day over the year. The peak stretch ran from July through September: July delivered 292.9 hours, August led with 364.6 hours, and September followed closely with 322.7 hours. Warm, mild conditions accompanied this sunny spell, with August averaging 17.7°C (63.9°F).

In contrast, the darkest months were squarely in winter. February 2025 saw just 118.6 hours of sunshine, followed by December (123.1 hours) and January (130.1 hours) — barely a third of August's total.

For visitors and residents planning sun-dependent activities, this makes August and September the clear standouts in Calgary. These late-season months pair the longest stretches of daylight sun with comfortable temperatures and relatively low rainfall, ideal for hiking, patios, and exploring the nearby Rockies. If you want the most sunshine Calgary has to offer, aim for the August-to-September window rather than the dim, short days of midwinter.

Question 3

Which season is the wettest in Calgary?

Accepted Answer

Summer is by far the wettest season in Calgary, with the city receiving 723.8 mm (28.5 in) of precipitation during the meteorological summer of 2025 (June 1 to August 31). That single season accounted for nearly 69% of Calgary's entire annual rainfall.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Calgary recorded 1,050.3 mm (41.4 in) of total precipitation. The summer months drove most of that total:

- **June 2025:** 225.6 mm (8.9 in)
- **July 2025:** 394.2 mm (15.5 in) — the wettest month of the year
- **August 2025:** 104.0 mm (4.1 in)

Spring (March to May 2025) was the second-wettest season at 218.3 mm (8.6 in), or about 21% of the annual total, as moisture built through May. Autumn (September to November 2025) was much drier at just 73.7 mm (2.9 in).

Winter was the driest stretch of all: the winter months falling within 2025 (January, February and December) brought only 34.5 mm (1.4 in) combined, with January the driest month at 5.4 mm (0.2 in).

For visitors and residents, this means Calgary's summer delivers warm temperatures alongside its heaviest rain, often as afternoon thunderstorms, so an umbrella is worth packing from June through August. If you prefer drier conditions, the autumn and winter months are noticeably less wet, making September a particularly dry, settled time to explore the city.

Question 4

What were the temperature extremes in Calgary in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Calgary's temperature extremes in 2025 ranged from a scorching high of 32.2°C (90.0°F) to a bitter low of -30.2°C (-22.4°F), a remarkable annual swing of 62.4°C (112.3°F).

The hottest day of the year arrived on July 8, 2025, when the mercury peaked at 32.2°C (90.0°F). At the other end, the coldest reading came during the deep winter cold snap of February 19, 2025, when temperatures plunged to -30.2°C (-22.4°F). Across the full calendar year, Calgary averaged a mean temperature of 5.2°C (41.4°F).

These extremes were not isolated events. In 2025, Calgary recorded 5 days reaching 30°C (86°F) or hotter and a generous 64 days climbing to 25°C (77°F) or above. Winter cold was equally assertive, with 30 days where the low dropped to -20°C (-4°F) or colder.

This enormous temperature range reflects Calgary's continental climate and its elevation of roughly 1,072 metres (3,517 feet) on the edge of the Rockies. For residents and visitors, it means packing for genuine contrasts: lightweight summer clothing for warm July afternoons and serious insulated layers for the sharp Arctic outbreaks that define a Calgary winter.

Question 5

How cold does Calgary get in winter?

Accepted Answer

Calgary gets genuinely cold in winter, with an average seasonal temperature of −7.7°C (18.1°F) during Winter 2024/2025 (December 2024 to February 2025) and overnight lows that plunged as far as −30.2°C (−22.4°F).

The cold deepened as the season went on. December 2024 was the mildest month with a mean of −4.3°C (24.3°F), followed by January 2025 at −5.8°C (21.6°F), before February 2025 turned sharply colder at −13.1°C (8.4°F). Across the three months, the coldest nights averaged −25.4°C (−13.8°F), so sub −20°C lows were a regular feature rather than an exception.

What makes Calgary's winter unusual is how quickly it can flip. Thanks to the city's famous chinook winds, February 2025 also produced the warmest reading of the season at 14.3°C (57.7°F) — a swing of more than 44°C (80°F) between the month's extreme low and high. These warm, dry chinooks can melt snow and lift temperatures above freezing within hours.

For visitors and residents, this means winter in Calgary demands serious cold-weather gear, including insulated layers and protection against wind chill on the coldest February days. At the same time, the chinook effect offers frequent thaws and bright, mild breaks, so Calgary's winter rarely stays bitterly cold for long stretches without relief.
