Question 1

When is the rainy season in Santiago?

Accepted Answer

Santiago has a distinctly seasonal rainfall pattern, with almost all of its rain falling between May and August. In 2025, the city recorded 421.9 mm (16.6 in) of precipitation for the full year, and roughly three-quarters of that total arrived during these late-autumn and winter months.

The two wettest months in Santiago were May, with 104.1 mm (4.1 in), and June, with 102.2 mm (4.0 in). Together, the May-to-August period delivered 321.9 mm (12.7 in) of rain, accounting for about 76% of the annual total. The meteorological winter months of June, July and August (JJA) alone brought 217.8 mm (8.6 in).

By contrast, summer in Santiago is remarkably dry. The combined rainfall for December, January and February (DJF) reached just 3.2 mm (0.13 in), and January 2025 saw essentially no measurable rain at all. This Mediterranean-style climate concentrates moisture into the cooler half of the year.

For visitors, this means the May–August window is when Santiago is most likely to see wet days and lower visibility toward the nearby Andes. If you want reliably dry weather for sightseeing or outdoor activities, the late-spring and summer stretch from November through February is the safest bet, while travelers hoping to catch the green hillsides and fresh snow on the mountains should aim for the winter rainy season.

Question 2

What is the sunniest time of year in Santiago?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Santiago is the late spring and summer stretch from November through February, with January 2025 being the brightest month of all.

In January 2025, Santiago recorded 424.4 hours of sunshine — roughly 13.7 hours per day — paired with virtually no rainfall (0.0 mm / 0.0 in). The other peak months were close behind: December 2025 saw 395.9 hours, November 2025 reached 374.7 hours, and February 2025 logged 369.1 hours. Across the full year, Santiago accumulated 3,743.3 hours of sunshine in 2025, averaging about 10.3 hours of sun per day.

By contrast, the darkest stretch fell in the winter months (December–February is summer here, so the low point is mid-year): June 2025 had just 205.5 hours of sunshine (about 6.8 hours per day), followed by August 2025 with 217.0 hours.

These long, dry summer days make November to February the ideal window for outdoor plans in Santiago. January 2025 not only led on sunshine but also brought warm conditions, with an average temperature of 22.6°C (72.7°F) and daytime highs reaching 33.4°C (92.1°F). If you want maximum daylight for hiking, sightseeing, or exploring the surrounding Andes foothills, this peak summer period offers the most reliable sun and the lowest chance of rain.

Question 3

What were the temperature extremes in Santiago in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Santiago's temperatures in 2025 ranged from a sweltering high of **35.8°C (96.4°F)** on February 8 down to a frosty low of **−3.9°C (25.0°F)** on the night of August 22, spanning nearly 40°C (about 72°F) across the year.

The hottest conditions arrived in late summer, with February the warmest month overall at a 22.7°C (72.9°F) average. In total, Santiago recorded 66 days that climbed to 30°C (86°F) or higher in 2025, though only a single day pushed past the 35°C (95°F) mark.

Winter brought the sharpest cold. June was the coldest month, averaging just 8.8°C (47.9°F), and the city saw 5 frost nights when temperatures dropped to 0°C (32°F) or below. The coldest daytime high of the year reached only 5.7°C (42.3°F) on August 21.

Across all of 2025, Santiago's annual mean temperature settled at 16.0°C (60.7°F), reflecting its Mediterranean-style climate with hot, dry summers and cool, occasionally frosty winters.

For visitors, this wide swing matters: pack light, breathable clothing and sun protection for the December–February heat, but bring warm layers if travelling between June and August, when chilly mornings and frost are realistic in Santiago.

Question 4

What is the weather like in Santiago in July?

Accepted Answer

July is one of the coldest months in Santiago, sitting in the heart of the Southern Hemisphere winter (June to August), yet it stays mild and remarkably dry compared to many winter destinations. In July 2025, the city averaged a mean temperature of 11.0°C (51.7°F).

During July 2025, daytime highs in Santiago averaged 17.0°C (62.6°F), while overnight lows dropped to around 6.3°C (43.4°F). The month's warmest afternoon reached 22.6°C (72.7°F), and the coldest night fell to just 1.3°C (34.3°F), so frost is possible but full-on freezing is rare in the city itself.

Rainfall was minimal in July 2025. Santiago recorded only 11.1 mm (0.44 in) of precipitation across just 2 wet days, leaving 29 dry days in the month. Skies were generous too, with a total of 244 hours of sunshine, averaging about 7.9 hours of sun per day. Humidity stayed moderate at 64.1%, and winds were light at roughly 2.0 km/h (1.3 mph) on average.

For travelers, July in Santiago means crisp, sunny winter days that are comfortable for city sightseeing, museums, and vineyard visits, with cool but manageable evenings that call for a warm jacket. The dependable sunshine and very low rainfall also make it a popular base for day trips to the nearby Andes, where the higher elevations turn into the region's main ski areas during these winter months.

Question 5

What is the annual temperature range in Santiago in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Santiago had a wide annual temperature range in 2025, swinging from a warmest monthly average of 22.7°C (72.9°F) in February down to a coldest monthly average of 8.8°C (47.8°F) in June — a spread of about 13.9°C (25.0°F) between its warmest and coolest months.

Across the full year, Santiago averaged 16.0°C (60.8°F), with typical daily highs around 28.7°C (83.7°F) and daily lows near 5.1°C (41.3°F). The extremes stretched even further: the hottest monthly peak reached 35.8°C (96.4°F) in February 2025, while the coldest reading dipped to -3.9°C (25.0°F) in August 2025. That gives a full annual span of nearly 39.7°C (71.5°F) from the year's highest high to its lowest low.

This pronounced range reflects Santiago's semi-arid, inland setting in central Chile, where clear skies and its 656 m (2,152 ft) elevation allow daytime heat to escape quickly after sunset.

For visitors, this means packing for big day-to-night swings year-round. Even in the warm months of December through February, Santiago's mornings and evenings stay comfortable, while the cooler June-to-August stretch brings chilly, frost-prone nights despite mild afternoons. Lightweight daytime clothing paired with a warm layer for the evening works well across most of the year in Santiago.
