Question 1

Which season is wettest in Guangzhou?

Accepted Answer

Summer is by far the wettest season in Guangzhou, with the meteorological summer months of June to August 2025 (JJA) delivering 1,154 mm (45.4 in) of rain — about 53% of the city's entire annual rainfall.

Guangzhou's subtropical monsoon climate concentrates precipitation heavily in the warmer half of the year. In 2025 the city recorded 2,169 mm (85.4 in) of rain in total, and summer alone accounted for more than half of it. The single wettest month was June 2025, which saw an exceptional 519 mm (20.4 in) of rainfall.

The other seasons were much drier by comparison. Spring (March to May) was the second-wettest period at 617 mm, while autumn (September to November) brought 354 mm. The winter months of January and February 2025 were strikingly dry, with just 30 mm combined.

Summer rain in Guangzhou also comes with intense heat and humidity. Across June to August 2025, the average temperature was 28.3°C (82.9°F) and average humidity reached 84%, so downpours are typically warm, heavy, and often brief.

For visitors, this means the summer wet season in Guangzhou calls for a reliable umbrella or rain jacket and flexible plans, as heavy showers and thunderstorms are common. Travelers seeking drier, more comfortable conditions will find late autumn and winter — from November through January — the most reliable months to explore the city.

Question 2

How hot does Guangzhou get in summer?

Accepted Answer

Guangzhou gets hot and humid in summer, with daily high temperatures averaging **32.4°C (90.3°F)** across the meteorological summer of June to August 2025. Peak heat arrived on July 9, 2025, when the temperature climbed to **36.6°C (97.9°F)**.

Across summer 2025 (June 1 to August 31), Guangzhou recorded the following:

- **11 days** reached or exceeded 35°C (95°F), and 43 days hit at least 33°C (91.4°F)
- Overnight lows stayed warm, averaging **25.4°C (77.7°F)**, with the muggiest night dipping only to 28.2°C (82.8°F)
- July was the hottest month, with a mean temperature of 29.0°C (84.2°F), compared to 27.8°C (82.0°F) in June and 28.1°C (82.6°F) in August

What makes Guangzhou feel even hotter is the humidity, which averaged around 84% over the season. Combined with the high overnight temperatures, this means the city offers little relief from the heat after dark during summer.

For visitors, this points to early-morning or evening sightseeing, frequent hydration, and air-conditioned indoor breaks during the hottest afternoon hours. The persistent warmth and humidity of a Guangzhou summer make lightweight, breathable clothing essential, and outdoor activities are most comfortable before mid-morning.

Question 3

When is the sunniest time of year in Guangzhou?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Guangzhou is mid-summer, with **July 2025** recording the most sunshine of any month at 293.3 hours — roughly 9.5 hours of sun per day. Across the full year, Guangzhou enjoyed a generous 2,621.6 hours of sunshine in 2025, averaging about 218 hours per month.

After July, the brightest months were January (267.1 hours), September (255.9 hours) and August (244.6 hours). The cloudiest stretch came in February, which managed only 110.4 hours of sunshine.

It's worth noting that the sunniest months are not always the driest. July, despite leading on sunshine, was also very wet, with 324.0 mm (12.8 in) of rain and warm average temperatures of 29.0°C (84.2°F). For travellers who want plenty of sunshine without the heavy summer rains, October stands out: it combined 220.6 hours of sun with just 43.8 mm (1.7 in) of rain and a comfortable mean temperature of 26.7°C (80.1°F).

In practical terms, if you simply want the longest, brightest days in Guangzhou, plan for July. But for the best balance of sunshine, warmth and dry conditions, autumn — and October in particular — offers the most pleasant sunny weather. These 2025 figures confirm that Guangzhou is a sunny city year-round, rarely dropping below 180 hours of sunshine in any month outside of February.

Question 4

What is the weather like in Guangzhou in January?

Accepted Answer

January is one of the mildest and driest months in Guangzhou, with comfortable, mostly sunny days and cool nights rather than the cold winters seen in northern China. In January 2025, the city averaged 16.5°C (61.7°F), making it a pleasant time to explore on foot.

Daytime conditions were notably warm for winter. Across January 2025, daily highs averaged 22.4°C (72.4°F) and reached as high as 25.8°C (78.4°F) on January 24, while overnight lows averaged 11.2°C (52.2°F). The coldest night dipped to just 6.9°C (44.4°F) on January 13, so frost was never a concern. Remarkably, 26 of the 31 days climbed to at least 20°C (68°F).

The month was also exceptionally dry and bright. Guangzhou recorded only 3.9mm (0.15in) of total rainfall across just 3 days with any precipitation, leaving 28 dry days. Sunshine was abundant at 267 hours for the month, averaging about 8.6 hours per day, and humidity stayed moderate at around 45%.

These conditions make January an excellent month to visit Guangzhou. The combination of warm afternoons, low rainfall, and plenty of sunshine is ideal for sightseeing, outdoor dining, and strolling the city's parks and riverside. A light jacket is handy for cooler evenings, but heavy winter clothing is rarely needed in Guangzhou at this time of year.

Question 5

How humid is Guangzhou throughout the year?

Accepted Answer

Guangzhou is a humid subtropical city, with an average relative humidity of **73.1%** across 2025 and a sharp split between a muggy wet season and a drier, more comfortable winter.

Humidity peaks in the meteorological summer (June to August), which averaged **84.3%** in 2025 and ranged from 83.7% to 85.2%. The single most humid month was June at **85.2%**, coinciding with the year's heaviest rainfall of 518.6 mm (20.4 in). In total, four months — May through August — sat at or above 80% humidity, making this the stickiest stretch of the Guangzhou calendar.

At the other extreme, the air dries out noticeably in winter. The Jan–Feb portion of winter 2025 averaged just **55.5%** humidity, and January was the least humid month of all at **45.2%** — a full 40 percentage points below the June peak.

A few practical takeaways for Guangzhou:

- **May–September:** expect oppressive, sticky heat; light, breathable clothing and air conditioning make a real difference.
- **November–February:** the most comfortable window, with lower humidity pairing well with mild temperatures around 16–20°C (61–68°F).

Because Guangzhou's annual mean temperature reached 23.3°C (73.9°F) in 2025, the high summer humidity amplifies the perceived heat considerably, so the drier autumn and winter months are generally the best time for outdoor sightseeing and walking tours in the city.
