Question 1

Which months had the most sunshine in Athens in 2025?

Accepted Answer

July was the sunniest month in Athens in 2025, with 439.9 hours of sunshine, closely followed by June (429.7 hours) and August (404.3 hours). The peak of summer firmly delivers the brightest skies in the Greek capital.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Athens recorded a remarkable 3,382.5 hours of sunshine. The summer months alone (June to August) accounted for 1,273.9 hours, averaging more than 14 hours of sun per day in July. This abundance of sunshine came alongside very little rain, with July seeing just 3.5 mm (0.14 in) of precipitation and daytime highs reaching up to 41.1°C (106°F).

The contrast with the darker half of the year is striking. February was the least sunny month in 2025 with only 160.0 hours, while the winter and late-autumn months (November to February) each stayed below 200 hours.

For visitors, these figures make the appeal of an Athens summer clear: long, dependable sunny days are ideal for sightseeing at the Acropolis, beach trips, and outdoor dining. However, the intense July and August sun, paired with high temperatures, means midday shade, hydration, and sun protection are essential. Travelers seeking strong sunshine with slightly gentler heat may prefer May or September, both of which still delivered over 340 hours of sun in 2025 while keeping average temperatures in the comfortable low-to-mid 20s°C (low-to-mid 70s°F).

Question 2

What were the temperature extremes in Athens in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Athens recorded its hottest day of 2025 on July 24, when the temperature peaked at **41.1°C (106.0°F)**, while its coldest moment came on February 23 with an overnight low of **−0.7°C (30.7°F)**. This gave Athens an annual temperature range of roughly 41.8°C (75°F) across the full year.

The summer of 2025 (June to August) drove most of the heat, with Athens climbing to **35°C (95°F) or higher on 32 separate days**. July was especially intense, with the warmest 24-hour average reaching 32.8°C (91.0°F) on July 25. Only a single day topped the 40°C (104°F) mark.

Cold extremes were brief and mild by comparison. Athens dipped to freezing or below on just **2 days** all year, both in February, so frost is rare even in the heart of winter. Across all 365 days of 2025, the annual mean temperature settled at **18.3°C (65.0°F)**, reflecting the city's warm Mediterranean climate.

For visitors, these figures show that Athens summers can be genuinely hot, so July and August trips call for sun protection, hydration, and indoor breaks during midday peaks. Spring and autumn offer far more comfortable conditions, with winter staying mild and largely frost-free, making Athens a pleasant year-round destination outside the intense summer heat.

Question 3

Which season is the wettest in Athens?

Accepted Answer

Autumn is the wettest season in Athens, with the months of September to November 2025 (the meteorological autumn, SON) delivering roughly 219 mm (8.6 in) of rain — about 43% of the city's entire annual rainfall.

Athens recorded 506.6 mm (19.9 in) of precipitation across all of 2025. By meteorological season, autumn (September–November) led with 219 mm (8.6 in), followed distantly by spring (March–May) and the January–February portion of winter, each near 86 mm (3.4 in). Summer (June–August) was by far the driest stretch at just 41.2 mm (1.6 in). The single wettest month was November 2025, which alone saw 131.9 mm (5.2 in) of rain, while July was the driest at only 3.5 mm (0.1 in).

This strong autumn peak reflects the typical Mediterranean climate pattern around Athens, where warm, dry summers give way to unsettled, rain-bearing systems in late autumn. For visitors, this means September can still be pleasantly dry, but October and especially November bring a sharp rise in rainfall and higher humidity (around 72–77%). If you want to avoid the wettest conditions in Athens, the summer months are reliably arid, whereas late autumn is the time to pack an umbrella.

Question 4

What is the weather like in Athens in August?

Accepted Answer

Athens in August is hot, dry, and exceptionally sunny, with daily highs averaging 33.0°C (91.4°F) throughout the month in 2025. It is peak summer in the Greek capital, so visitors should plan for intense heat and abundant sunshine.

In August 2025, Athens recorded a mean temperature of 26.6°C (79.8°F), with daytime highs averaging 33.0°C (91.4°F) and overnight lows settling at a warm 20.2°C (68.3°F). The hottest day came on August 10, when the temperature peaked at 35.6°C (96.1°F). Heat was the rule rather than the exception: 15 days reached 33°C (91°F) or higher, and 4 days climbed to 35°C (95°F) or above.

Rainfall was almost non-existent. Athens saw just one wet day during the entire month, when a single storm on August 19 dropped 32.7 mm (1.29 in), accounting for nearly all of the month's 33.0 mm (1.30 in) total. Sunshine was relentless, with around 404 hours over the month, averaging about 13 hours of sun per day. Humidity stayed moderate at roughly 49%, and breezes were light at an average of 11.4 km/h (7.1 mph).

For travellers, August in Athens means reliable beach and island weather, but the midday heat can be draining for sightseeing at exposed sites like the Acropolis. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon, carry water, and use the long, warm evenings for dining out under clear skies.

Question 5

When is Athens windiest, and how strong are the winds?

Accepted Answer

Athens is windiest during the summer, with June 2025 recording the strongest average winds of the year at 11.9 km/h (7.4 mph). This pattern reflects the city's exposure to the seasonal northerly Meltemi winds that sweep across the Aegean from June through September.

Across the full 2025 calendar year (January to December), Athens averaged a gentle 10.0 km/h (6.2 mph), so winds here are generally light overall. The summer months (June to August 2025) stood out as the breeziest stretch, averaging 11.3 km/h (7.0 mph), with the three windiest months being:

- June: 11.9 km/h (7.4 mph)
- August: 11.4 km/h (7.1 mph)
- November: 11.0 km/h (6.8 mph)

At the other end of the scale, October 2025 was the calmest month at just 8.1 km/h (5.0 mph), closely followed by January and December. The annual spread between the windiest and calmest months was modest, ranging from 8.1 to 11.9 km/h (5.0 to 7.4 mph).

For visitors, these figures mean Athens rarely feels blustery. The summer breeze is actually a welcome relief, tempering the heat during the warmest part of the year and making sightseeing and seafront dining more comfortable. If you prefer the stillest conditions for activities like rooftop dining or photography, the autumn lull around October offers the calmest air, while spring stays steady and pleasant throughout.
