Question 1

Which season is the wettest in New Delhi?

Accepted Answer

Summer is by far the wettest season in New Delhi. During meteorological summer 2025 (June 1 to August 31), the city recorded about 401 mm (15.8 inches) of rain, more than half of its entire annual rainfall.

This summer downpour is driven by the southwest monsoon, which dominates New Delhi's weather from July onward. In 2025, the wettest months were:

- **August:** 164 mm (6.5 in), with average humidity around 82%
- **July:** 158 mm (6.2 in), humidity near 79%
- **September:** 150 mm (5.9 in)

For comparison, the other seasons stayed far drier. Autumn 2025 (September to November) totalled 183 mm (7.2 in), spring (March to May) just 93 mm (3.7 in), and the January–February portion of winter only 27 mm (1.1 in). Across the full year, New Delhi received roughly 703 mm (27.7 in) of precipitation, meaning the summer monsoon alone delivered about 57% of it.

In practical terms, if you want to avoid heavy rain and high humidity, plan around the monsoon months. The wettest, most humid stretch in New Delhi runs from July through September, when sudden downpours and sticky air are common. The cooler, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit, offering clear skies and minimal rainfall.

Question 2

How hot does New Delhi get in summer?

Accepted Answer

New Delhi gets intensely hot in summer, with daytime highs averaging **34.0°C (93.1°F)** across the meteorological summer of 2025 (June 1 to August 31) and peaking well above 43°C (109°F) during the pre-monsoon weeks.

The hottest day in New Delhi in 2025 fell on **June 9, when the temperature reached 43.8°C (110.8°F)**. June was the most punishing month, with average highs of 36.7°C (98.0°F) and **8 days at or above 40°C (104°F)**. Across the full summer, 25 days climbed to 35°C (95°F) or hotter. Even nights stayed warm, with daily lows averaging 26.6°C (80.0°F) and one night dropping no lower than 32.2°C (90.0°F).

Conditions shifted sharply once the monsoon arrived in mid-June. Average humidity over the season was 74%, and New Delhi recorded roughly 401mm (15.8 in) of rain, which cooled the extreme dry heat into a more humid, sticky warmth for July and August.

For visitors, this means the early summer of 2025 in New Delhi brought dangerous dry-heat conditions best avoided during midday, while the later monsoon months traded the scorching temperatures for higher humidity and frequent downpours. Lightweight clothing, sun protection, and steady hydration are essential for anyone exploring the city between June and August.

Question 3

What is the weather like in New Delhi in January?

Accepted Answer

January is one of the coolest and most pleasant months in New Delhi, with mild, sunny afternoons and chilly nights. In January 2025, the city had a mean temperature of 14.1°C (57.3°F), making it a welcome break from the intense heat of other seasons.

Daytime highs in New Delhi averaged 20.5°C (68.9°F), while nights cooled to an average low of 9.0°C (48.1°F). The coldest night fell on January 9, 2025, dropping to 7.0°C (44.6°F), and the month warmed gradually toward its end, peaking at a daytime high of 27.0°C (80.6°F) on January 31, 2025.

January was also notably dry and bright. Total rainfall reached just 12.3 mm (0.48 in) spread across 7 days with measurable precipitation, while the month delivered about 261.8 hours of sunshine, or roughly 8.4 sunny hours per day. Humidity stayed high at an average of 79.5%, which often contributes to the morning fog New Delhi is known for in winter.

For visitors, January in New Delhi is ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities, with comfortable daytime temperatures and minimal rain. Pack a warm layer for early mornings and evenings, as nights can feel cold, but expect plenty of sunshine to enjoy the city's parks and monuments during the day.

Question 4

When is the sunniest time of year in New Delhi?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in New Delhi is spring, with **April 2025** topping the chart at 363.6 hours of sunshine — about 12.1 hours of sun per day. New Delhi enjoys abundant sunshine almost year-round, but the spring months stand out as the brightest.

The three sunniest months of 2025 were all consecutive:

- **April:** 363.6 hours (12.1 hours/day), with highs near 42.3°C (108.1°F)
- **May:** 358.4 hours (11.6 hours/day), with highs near 43.0°C (109.4°F)
- **March:** 356.8 hours (11.5 hours/day), with highs near 39.2°C (102.6°F)

Across all of 2025, New Delhi recorded a remarkable 3,731 total hours of sunshine, averaging 311 hours per month, or roughly 10.2 hours of daylight sun per day. The least sunny month was January 2025 at 261.8 hours, when winter fog frequently dims the morning sky.

For visitors, this means New Delhi delivers clear, bright skies for most of the year. The spring peak from March to May offers the longest sunshine hours, but it pairs that brightness with intense heat above 40°C (104°F), so early mornings are best for sightseeing. The pleasant shoulder months of October and November still provide over 300 hours of sunshine each with far more comfortable temperatures, making them an ideal balance of sunny weather and mild conditions in New Delhi.

Question 5

What were the temperature extremes in New Delhi in 2025?

Accepted Answer

New Delhi swung between a blistering high of **43.8°C (110.8°F)** and a chilly low of **7.0°C (44.6°F)** across 2025, giving the city an annual temperature range of roughly 36.8°C (66°F).

The hottest day of 2025 fell on **June 9**, when the mercury peaked at 43.8°C (110.8°F) during the pre-monsoon heat. At the other end of the scale, the coldest night arrived on **January 9**, dipping to just 7.0°C (44.6°F) in the depths of the North Indian winter.

Extreme heat was far from a one-off event in New Delhi. The data shows the city recorded a remarkable **31 days at or above 40°C (104°F)** during 2025, with the warmest stretch concentrated in the build-up to the monsoon. April was the hottest month on average, posting mean daily highs of 38.8°C (101.8°F).

This wide spread between summer and winter has practical implications. Visitors planning outdoor sightseeing in New Delhi should treat the April–June window with caution, carrying water and avoiding midday exposure when temperatures routinely top 40°C (104°F). The cooler January nights, by contrast, are comfortable but can feel sharp after sunset, so a warm layer is worth packing.

Overall, 2025 confirms New Delhi's reputation as a city of weather extremes, where searing summers and crisp winter mornings sit just months apart on the calendar.
