Question 1

What is the sunniest time of year in Milan?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Milan is the summer, with June 2025 standing out as the single brightest month of the year. Across meteorological summer (June to August 2025), Milan recorded the bulk of its annual sunshine.

In 2025, Milan accumulated about 2,704 hours of sunshine over the full year, averaging roughly 7.4 hours per day. The summer months alone delivered 1,075 hours, nearly 40% of the annual total, at an average of about 11.7 hours of sunshine per day.

Key sunshine figures for Milan in 2025:

- **June 2025:** 368 hours, the sunniest month, averaging 12.3 hours per day
- **August 2025:** 356 hours
- **July 2025:** 352 hours
- **February 2025:** just 83 hours (only 2.7 hours per day), the gloomiest month

These long, bright June days also came with warm, mostly dry conditions, as Milan averaged 25.8°C (78.4°F) that month with only 44 mm (1.7 in) of rain. Across the whole summer, mean temperatures held around 24.7°C (76.5°F).

For travelers, this makes early summer the prime window in Milan for sightseeing, rooftop terraces, and day trips to the nearby lakes. By contrast, the short, overcast days of late winter offer barely a fifth of June's sunshine, so plan outdoor-heavy itineraries for the June-to-August stretch.

Question 2

What was the hottest day in Milan in 2025?

Accepted Answer

The hottest day in Milan in 2025 was June 28, when the temperature peaked at 37.6°C (99.7°F). That same searing high was matched again on July 4, 2025, making these the two most extreme heat days of the year.

The city saw a notably hot summer overall in 2025. Across the meteorological summer (June 1 to August 31), daily highs averaged 31.1°C (88.1°F), and the city recorded:

- **55 days** with highs of at least 30°C (86°F)
- **23 days** reaching 35°C (95°F) or above
- A summer mean temperature of 24.7°C (76.5°F)

On the record-setting June 28, the temperature stayed warm even overnight, dropping only to 19.4°C (66.9°F), while the daily average reached 29.5°C (85.1°F). By contrast, the coldest moment of the year came on January 15, 2025, when temperatures fell to −7.5°C (18.5°F).

These figures show that Milan can experience intense, prolonged heat in mid-summer. If you plan to visit Milan in late June through early August, prepare for frequent days near or above 35°C (95°F) — stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned spaces during peak afternoon hours, and schedule outdoor sightseeing for the cooler early morning or evening.

Question 3

Which season is the wettest in Milan?

Accepted Answer

Spring is the wettest season in Milan, with the months of March to May 2025 delivering roughly 649 mm (25.5 inches) of rain — more than any other meteorological season that year.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Milan recorded about 1,810 mm (71.3 inches) of total precipitation. Spring (March–May) led with 649 mm (25.5 in), followed by summer (June–August) at 489 mm (19.3 in) and autumn (September–November) at 361 mm (14.2 in). The Jan–Feb portion of winter was the quietest stretch, contributing just 206 mm (8.1 in).

The single wettest month was May 2025, when Milan was soaked by 321 mm (12.6 in) of rain. By contrast, June 2025 was the driest month of the year, with only 44 mm (1.7 in) — a sharp swing from the heavy spring rainfall that preceded it.

For visitors and residents, this means spring in Milan, while mild and green, comes with a real chance of prolonged wet spells, so an umbrella is essential from March through May. Early summer offers a brief dry window before showers return in July and August. If you want the lowest rainfall risk, late autumn into mid-winter (October to February) tends to be the most reliably dry time to explore the city.

Question 4

What is the annual temperature range in Milan?

Accepted Answer

Milan has a wide annual temperature range, swinging from a low of **-7.5°C (18.5°F)** in January 2025 to a high of **37.6°C (99.7°F)** in June 2025 — a full spread of about 45°C (81°F) across the year.

This large variation reflects Milan's position in the Po Valley, where cold, sometimes frosty winters give way to hot, humid summers. Looking at 2025 monthly averages, the coldest month was January with a mean of just **3.7°C (38.7°F)**, while June was the warmest at **25.8°C (78.4°F)**. That difference of around 22°C (40°F) between the coldest and warmest months shows how dramatically conditions shift between seasons in Milan.

Across the whole of 2025, the city's average temperature settled at **14.1°C (57.4°F)**, sitting comfortably between those winter and summer extremes. Daytime highs climbed above 37°C (99°F) in June, July, and August, while the deepest cold arrived in mid-winter and again in November, which dipped to -5.5°C (22.1°F).

For visitors and residents, this means packing for very different conditions depending on the season. A trip to Milan in summer calls for lightweight clothing and sun protection against frequent 30°C-plus (86°F-plus) heat, whereas winter visits require warm layers for near- and below-freezing nights. The shoulder months of April, May, October, and November offer the mildest, most comfortable middle ground in Milan.

Question 5

How much total rainfall does Milan get in a year?

Accepted Answer

Milan recorded roughly 1,810 mm (71.3 inches) of total rainfall across 2025, making it a notably wet year for this northern Italian city. That works out to an average of about 151 mm (5.9 inches) of precipitation per month.

Rainfall in Milan was spread unevenly through 2025. Spring (March to May) was the soggiest stretch, delivering 649 mm (25.5 inches), while the meteorological summer months of June to August still added up to 489 mm (19.3 inches). The standout month was **May 2025**, with an exceptional 321 mm (12.6 inches) of rain.

The drier points of the year were concentrated in early summer and mid-autumn:

- **June 2025:** the driest month with just 44 mm (1.7 inches)
- **October 2025:** 56 mm (2.2 inches)
- **February 2025:** 100 mm (3.9 inches)

For visitors and residents, this means Milan rarely sees a truly dry season — rain can fall in any month, so a compact umbrella is worth packing year-round. If you want to dodge the heaviest downpours, the late-spring peak around May is best avoided, while June and October in 2025 offered the most settled, rain-free conditions. Overall, the 2025 totals confirm Milan's reputation for a humid, well-watered climate driven by its position on the Po Valley plain at just 127 m (417 ft) elevation.
