Question 1

How hot does Florence get in summer?

Accepted Answer

Florence gets reliably hot in summer, with daily highs averaging 32.1°C (89.8°F) across the meteorological summer of 2025 (June 1 to August 31) and a peak of 38.1°C (100.6°F).

Over those three months in 2025, the overall mean temperature was 25.0°C (77.1°F), with daily lows averaging a mild 18.2°C (64.7°F). Heat was the defining feature of the season: Florence recorded 64 days at or above 30°C (86°F) and 25 days reaching 35°C (95°F) or higher. The hottest day was July 1, 2025, when the temperature climbed to 38.1°C (100.6°F).

The heat was not just a daytime affair, as the warmest night bottomed out at only 21.9°C (71.4°F), making for some sticky, tropical evenings. Rainfall over the summer totalled 168.9mm (6.6in), mostly delivered in short, sharp thunderstorms rather than steady rain.

For visitors, this means Florence in summer is best enjoyed with early-morning sightseeing and shaded afternoon breaks, as the inland Arno valley setting traps heat and offers little sea breeze. Carrying water, planning indoor museum time during peak afternoon hours, and choosing accommodation with air conditioning are sensible strategies for the city's intense summer warmth.

Question 2

How much rainfall does Florence get in a year?

Accepted Answer

Florence received a total of **846.8 mm (33.3 inches)** of rainfall across 2025, making it a moderately wet climate with precipitation spread fairly evenly throughout the year.

On average, Florence saw about **70.6 mm (2.8 inches)** of rain per month in 2025. Rather than having a single dramatic rainy season, the city experienced steady precipitation, with most months recording between 60 and 90 mm. The wettest month was **May 2025 at 91.4 mm (3.60 inches)**, while the driest was **June 2025 with just 19.4 mm (0.76 inches)** — a brief but pronounced early-summer dry spell.

Looking at the full meteorological seasons within 2025, spring (March–May) was the rainiest period at **254.9 mm (10.0 inches)**, followed by autumn (September–November) at **212.3 mm (8.4 inches)**. Summer (June–August) was the driest season overall at **169.0 mm (6.7 inches)**, though heavier July storms kept it from being completely dry.

For visitors, this means rain is possible in Florence in any month, so packing a light rain layer is sensible year-round. The relatively dry early summer makes June a good bet for outdoor sightseeing and walking tours, while spring travelers should be prepared for the occasional shower despite the pleasant temperatures.

Question 3

What is the sunniest time of year in Florence?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Florence is the summer, with June 2025 standing out as the brightest month of all. Florence recorded 423.4 hours of sunshine in June 2025 — roughly 14 hours of sun per day.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Florence accumulated 2,891 hours of sunshine. The summer months (meteorological summer, June to August 2025) alone delivered 1,153 hours, or about 40% of the city's annual total. June was not only the sunniest month but also one of the driest, with just 19.4mm (0.76 in) of rain, while its average temperature reached 25.6°C (78.1°F) and highs touched 37.8°C (100.0°F).

Sunshine in Florence builds steadily through spring before peaking in early summer:

- **June 2025:** 423.4 hours (sunniest)
- **July 2025:** 366.8 hours
- **August 2025:** 362.9 hours
- **January 2025:** 105.2 hours (least sunny)

The dark end of the scale falls in midwinter, when January and February 2025 averaged only about 112 hours of sunshine each.

For visitors, this means late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable sunshine for sightseeing in Florence, though peak summer also brings the year's most intense heat. May and September are appealing alternatives, pairing generous daylight with milder, more comfortable temperatures.

Question 4

How cold does Florence get in January?

Accepted Answer

January is the coldest month of the year in Florence, with an average temperature of around 8.0°C (46.4°F) in 2025. While daytime conditions stay mild, nights can dip below freezing.

In January 2025, daytime highs in Florence climbed to a maximum of 16.5°C (61.7°F), but the month's coldest night fell to -3.1°C (26.4°F). This made January the chilliest month of the year, narrowly edging out December (8.2°C / 46.8°F mean). For comparison, Florence's annual average temperature in 2025 was 15.7°C (60.3°F), so January ran well below the yearly norm.

January was also fairly wet, recording 69.8mm (2.75 inches) of precipitation, typical of the city's cool, damp winter climate.

Practically, this means visitors to Florence in January should pack warm layers and a waterproof jacket. Mornings and evenings are cold enough for frost, so a hat and gloves are useful, though midday sun can feel pleasant when temperatures reach the low-to-mid teens Celsius. The cooler, quieter conditions make January a good time to explore Florence's museums and indoor attractions without the summer crowds, while still enjoying the occasional crisp, sunny afternoon.

Question 5

What is the annual temperature range in Florence?

Accepted Answer

Florence has a wide annual temperature range, swinging roughly 41°C (74°F) between its hottest and coldest readings across 2025. This reflects a classic inland Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cool, occasionally frosty winters.

In 2025, the warmest day in Florence reached a high of 38.1°C (100.6°F) in July, while the coldest dip fell to -3.2°C (26.2°F) in December. That gives a full-year spread of about 41.3°C (74.3°F) between the year's extremes.

Looking at monthly averages smooths out those peaks. June was the warmest month with a mean temperature of 25.6°C (78.1°F), while January was the coolest at 8.0°C (46.4°F) — a month-to-month swing of around 17.6°C (about 32°F). Across the whole of 2025, Florence averaged 15.7°C (60.3°F).

These seasonal contrasts shape how you should plan a visit. Summer in Florence brings reliable heat for sightseeing but can feel intense at midday, so early mornings and evenings are more comfortable. Winters are mild by northern European standards yet cold enough for occasional overnight frost, meaning a warm layer is worth packing from December through February. Spring and autumn sit comfortably in between, offering the gentlest conditions for exploring the city on foot.
