Question 1

Which months had the most sunshine in Tokyo in 2025?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest months in Tokyo in 2025 were July, August, and June, making the summer (June to August) by far the brightest time of year. July led the way with 330.5 hours of sunshine, equal to roughly 10.7 hours of sun per day.

Across the three summer months, Tokyo recorded 913.7 hours of sunshine, averaging about 304.6 hours per month. August followed July closely with 305.3 hours, while June added 277.9 hours. For comparison, Tokyo's typical month in 2025 saw 231.8 hours of sunshine, so each summer month ran well above average.

The summer brightness came alongside warmth, with mean temperatures of 24.4°C (75.9°F) in June, 28.3°C (82.9°F) in July, and 29.8°C (85.6°F) in August. The flip side of all that sun was heat, so these months suited early-morning sightseeing and evening activities more than midday outings.

At the other extreme, October 2025 was the cloudiest month with just 138.5 hours of sunshine, weighed down by 151.5mm of rain. Overall, Tokyo accumulated 2,781.9 hours of sunshine across 2025.

If you are planning a trip to Tokyo built around bright, dry-feeling days, the mid-summer stretch from June through August offers the most reliable sunshine, though you should pack for high heat and humidity. Spring and late autumn months like April and November also delivered over 220 hours of sun each, providing a more comfortable, milder alternative for outdoor exploration.

Question 2

What were the temperature extremes in Tokyo in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Tokyo swung through a temperature range of about 40.6°C (73°F) in 2025, from a scorching summer peak of 38.7°C (101.7°F) down to a winter low of -1.9°C (28.6°F).

The hottest day of the year hit Tokyo on August 30, 2025, when the high reached 38.7°C (101.7°F). The heat was relentless during the summer (June to August): the city recorded 30 days at or above 35°C (95°F) and 82 days at or above 30°C (86°F) across 2025, making prolonged outdoor exertion genuinely taxing.

At the other end, the coldest night came early in the year on January 5, 2025, with the temperature dipping to -1.9°C (28.6°F). Tokyo logged 22 nights that fell below freezing, almost all clustered in January and February. Even so, winter days stayed mild, with the chilliest daytime high of just 5.8°C (42.4°F) on December 27, 2025.

This wide annual spread is typical of Tokyo's humid subtropical climate, where summers are hot and sticky while winters are cool, dry, and largely frost-limited to overnight hours. For visitors, the practical takeaway is clear: pack lightweight, breathable clothing and sun protection for a Tokyo summer trip, but bring a warm layer for January and February evenings. The most comfortable temperatures fall in spring and autumn, when the extremes ease off considerably.

Question 3

Which season was the wettest in Tokyo in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Spring (March 1 to May 31, 2025) was the wettest season in Tokyo in 2025, delivering 483.1 mm (19.0 in) of rain — about 39% of the city's annual total.

Across the four meteorological seasons, Tokyo's rainfall in 2025 broke down as follows:

- **Spring (Mar–May 2025):** 483.1 mm (19.0 in)
- **Autumn (Sep–Nov 2025):** 407.8 mm (16.1 in)
- **Summer (Jun–Aug 2025):** 256.8 mm (10.1 in)
- **Winter (Jan–Feb 2025):** 51.4 mm (2.0 in)

May was the standout spring month with 192.5 mm (7.6 in), reflecting the build-up toward East Asia's early-summer rainy season. Autumn ran a close second overall, driven largely by September, which was the single wettest month of the entire year at 232.2 mm (9.1 in). For the full year, Tokyo recorded 1,240.4 mm (48.8 in) of precipitation in 2025.

The driest stretch was the Jan–Feb winter window, when February saw just 10.6 mm (0.4 in). For visitors, this pattern means late autumn and winter (November through February) offer Tokyo's most reliably dry conditions for sightseeing, while spring and early autumn travelers should pack rain gear and plan for frequent wet days.

Question 4

When is the best time to visit Tokyo for good weather?

Accepted Answer

The best time to visit Tokyo for good weather is **November**, which in 2025 combined comfortable, mild temperatures with the driest conditions of any pleasant month. It offers a sweet spot between the rainy spring, the hot and humid summer, and the cold of deep winter.

In November 2025, Tokyo had an average temperature of 11.9°C (53.4°F), with daytime highs around 21.5°C (70.7°F) and cool nights near 4.0°C (39.2°F). Rainfall was just 24.1mm (0.9in) for the entire month — the second-lowest of the year and by far the lowest among months warm enough for comfortable sightseeing.

This is a dramatic contrast with Tokyo's wetter and stickier stretches. September 2025 was the wettest month at 232.2mm (9.1in) of rain, while the summer peaked in August at a hot 29.8°C (85.6°F) average. By comparison, November's relatively crisp, dry air makes long days of walking far more enjoyable.

A few standout reasons November stands out in Tokyo:

- **Low rainfall:** 24.1mm (0.9in), versus over 150mm (5.9in) in spring and autumn peak months
- **Mild temperatures:** highs of 21.5°C (70.7°F), ideal for outdoor parks and temples
- **Comfortable conditions:** no summer heat above 30°C (86°F) and no winter freezes during the day

For travelers, this means November is excellent for exploring Tokyo's gardens, neighborhoods, and autumn foliage with minimal rain disruption and pleasant walking weather throughout the day.

Question 5

What is the weather like in Tokyo in August?

Accepted Answer

Tokyo in August is hot, humid, and largely sunny, making it the peak of the city's summer. In August 2025, Tokyo recorded an average temperature of 29.8°C (85.7°F), with daily highs averaging 34.5°C (94.0°F) and overnight lows staying warm at 26.0°C (78.8°F).

The heat was intense and persistent throughout the month. Tokyo saw 28 of 31 days reach at least 30°C (86°F), and 16 days climbed to 35°C (95°F) or higher. The hottest day was August 30, 2025, when the temperature peaked at 38.7°C (101.7°F). Nights offered little relief, with 24 "tropical nights" where the low never dropped below 25°C (77°F).

Humidity is a defining feature of Tokyo's August weather. Average relative humidity reached 69.8%, peaking at 83.6% on the most muggy days, which makes the heat feel even more oppressive. Despite this, the month was sunny, delivering 305.3 hours of sunshine, or roughly 9.8 hours per day. Rainfall stayed relatively light at 47.7mm (1.9 inches) total, though showers occurred on 17 days, often as brief afternoon downpours.

For travelers, August in Tokyo means planning around the heat: stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned shelter midday, and schedule sightseeing for early morning or evening. The reliable sunshine is great for festivals and fireworks, but the combination of high temperatures and humidity makes this one of the most physically demanding months to explore the city.
