Question 1

When is the rainy season in Mexico City and how much rain does it bring?

Accepted Answer

Mexico City's rainy season runs from May to October, and in 2025 it delivered roughly 90% of the city's entire annual rainfall during these six months.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Mexico City recorded about 1,508 mm (59.4 in) of total precipitation. Of that, 1,362 mm (53.6 in) fell during the wet season from May through October, while the dry season from November to April saw just 146 mm (5.7 in) combined. June was the wettest month by far with 370 mm (14.6 in), followed by September at 243 mm (9.6 in) and May at 237 mm (9.3 in).

The contrast is also visible in humidity and sunshine. Average humidity climbed to roughly 75% during the wet months versus about 54% in the dry season, and June received only 121 hours of sunshine as afternoon thunderstorms became a near-daily feature.

For visitors, this pattern makes the dry season the easier time to plan around Mexico City. January was the driest month of 2025 with just 11 mm (0.4 in) of rain. If you travel during the rainy season, mornings are often clear and sunny, with the heaviest downpours typically arriving in the late afternoon and evening, so an umbrella and flexible afternoon plans go a long way.

Question 2

When is the warmest time of year in Mexico City?

Accepted Answer

The warmest time of year in Mexico City is **spring**, specifically the months of March through May, with the peak heat arriving in May 2025. Thanks to its high elevation (2,248 m / 7,375 ft), Mexico City stays mild year-round, but spring is distinctly its warmest stretch — well before summer.

During spring 2025 (March 1 to May 31), the average temperature reached 18.0°C (64.5°F), with daily highs averaging a warm 31.4°C (88.6°F). May was the single warmest month, posting an average of 18.4°C (65.1°F) and the year's hottest reading of 32.5°C (90.5°F). April was nearly as warm, with daytime highs touching 31.0°C (87.8°F).

A surprising feature of Mexico City's climate is that summer is actually *cooler* than spring. The summer months of June to August 2025 averaged just 16.3°C (61.3°F), because afternoon rains and cloud cover suppress daytime heat. The coolest month of the year was December at 13.8°C (56.8°F).

Overall, Mexico City's monthly average temperatures varied by only 4.6°C (8.3°F) across all of 2025, making it one of the most temperate large cities in the world.

For visitors, this means the late dry season of April and May offers the warmest, sunniest days — ideal for sightseeing — though afternoons can feel hot in direct sun. Pack light layers, as nights remain cool even during the warmest months.

Question 3

What is the sunniest time of year in Mexico City?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Mexico City is the spring dry season, peaking in **April 2025** with 323 hours of sunshine — about 10.8 hours per day. This makes the March-to-May stretch the brightest window before the summer rains arrive.

Across 2025, Mexico City recorded several standout months for sunshine:

- **April:** 323.0 hours (≈10.8 hours/day)
- **March:** 296.8 hours (≈9.6 hours/day)
- **November:** 277.9 hours (≈9.3 hours/day)

In total, Mexico City enjoyed 2,905.5 hours of sunshine in 2025, averaging a generous 8.0 hours per day over the year. The contrast with the rainy season is sharp: June was the cloudiest month with just 120.7 hours of sunshine, or roughly 4.0 hours per day, as afternoon storms rolled in.

April also paired its abundant sunshine with very little rain, just 26.4mm (1.0in), and warm daytime highs reaching 31.0°C (87.8°F). These conditions make late spring the ideal time for outdoor sightseeing, rooftop dining, and day trips around Mexico City. If you want bright, dry days, plan a visit between March and April; if you prefer to avoid grey, wet afternoons, steer clear of June through September.

Question 4

How much does the temperature change between day and night in Mexico City?

Accepted Answer

Mexico City sees a remarkably large gap between daytime and nighttime temperatures, averaging about **21.8°C (39°F)** between the typical daily high and low across 2025. This wide daily swing is driven by the city's high elevation of roughly 2,248 metres (7,375 feet), where thin, dry air heats up quickly by day and loses that heat rapidly after sunset.

Across 2025, average daytime highs reached **27.7°C (81.9°F)** while nighttime lows dropped to around **5.9°C (42.6°F)**. The contrast was sharpest during the dry season, where the day-to-night spread averaged nearly **24.9°C**, compared with a milder **16.7°C** during the humid summer months of June to September when cloud cover and moisture hold in overnight warmth.

The single widest swing came in April 2025, when temperatures ranged from a chilly low of **1.8°C (35°F)** to a warm high of **31.0°C (88°F)** — a spread of over 29°C in one month. By contrast, August 2025 was the steadiest, with lows near **9.5°C (49°F)** and highs of **25.1°C (77°F)**.

For visitors to Mexico City, this means a single day can feel like two different seasons. Pleasant, spring-like afternoons give way to cool, sometimes cold evenings, so layered clothing is essential year-round. Travellers should especially pack a warm jacket between November and April, when clear skies push nighttime temperatures close to freezing even after mild, sunny days.

Question 5

What were the temperature extremes in Mexico City in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Mexico City's temperature extremes in 2025 ranged from a high of **32.5°C (90.5°F)** on May 16 to a low of **1.8°C (35.2°F)** on the pre-dawn morning of April 11. That gives the city an annual temperature range of about 30.7°C (55°F) across the full calendar year.

Sitting at 2,248 metres (7,375 ft) of elevation, Mexico City stays mild on average, with a 2025 annual mean temperature of just **16.2°C (61.1°F)**. The heat peaks in the dry pre-monsoon spring: April and May were the warmest months, averaging daily highs of 29.1°C (84.4°F) and 28.3°C (82.9°F) respectively. In total, 67 days in 2025 climbed to 28°C (82°F) or hotter.

The same high altitude that keeps summers comfortable also produces sharp overnight cooling. On 36 days during 2025, the temperature dropped to 5°C (41°F) or below, almost all of them clustered in the clear, dry nights of winter and early spring.

For visitors, this means Mexico City rarely feels extreme in either direction. Even on the hottest 2025 afternoons it stayed below the 33°C (91°F) mark, while the chilliest nights call for a warm layer rather than serious winter gear. Packing for a wide daily swing — light clothes for the day and a jacket for the evening — covers almost any time of year.
