Question 1

What were the temperature extremes in Johannesburg in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Johannesburg's temperatures in 2025 ranged from a high of **32.6°C (90.7°F)** on 31 January to a low of **-2.7°C (27.1°F)** on 28 June, giving the city an annual spread of about 35.3°C (63.5°F).

The hottest day arrived in midsummer, when the daytime maximum in Johannesburg peaked at 32.6°C (90.7°F) on 31 January 2025. The coldest reading came in mid-winter, with an overnight low of -2.7°C (27.1°F) on 28 June 2025. Sitting at roughly 1,645 m (5,397 ft) elevation, Johannesburg also recorded 6 nights at or below freezing during 2025.

Across the full year, conditions were mild overall. The 2025 average temperature was 16.2°C (61.1°F), built from a typical daily high of 22.5°C (72.5°F) and a typical daily low of 10.5°C (50.9°F). January was the warmest month, averaging 20.9°C (69.6°F), while June was the coldest at 9.9°C (49.8°F). Only 14 days reached 30°C (86°F) or higher.

For visitors, these figures show that Johannesburg rarely experiences dangerous heat, even at its 2025 peak. The bigger consideration is the cold: clear winter nights can dip below freezing thanks to the high altitude, so warm layers are essential for evenings between June and August, while summer days stay comfortably warm rather than scorching.

Question 2

When is the rainy season in Johannesburg?

Accepted Answer

Johannesburg has a distinctly seasonal, summer-rainfall climate: the rainy season runs through the warmer months from roughly October to March, while winter is strikingly dry. In 2025, the city recorded about 1,478 mm (58.2 in) of total precipitation, and nearly 79% of that fell in the October–March summer half of the year.

The wettest stretch came at the height of summer. December 2025 was the rainiest month with 330.3 mm (13.0 in), followed by November at 270.8 mm (10.7 in) and February at 257.8 mm (10.1 in). Across the summer half (October–March), Johannesburg collected roughly 1,172 mm (46.1 in) of rain.

Winter, by contrast, is remarkably arid. June 2025 was the driest month with just 0.9 mm (0.04 in) of rain, and the May–August period together produced only about 182 mm (7.1 in). These dry winter months also bring abundant sunshine, with June through August each logging close to 300 hours of sunshine.

For visitors, this pattern is practical to plan around. If you want to avoid Johannesburg's frequent afternoon thunderstorms, the dry winter months from May to August offer clear, sunny days and minimal rain, ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. If you prefer the green, lush landscape, the summer rainy season delivers dramatic but usually short-lived downpours rather than all-day rain.

Question 3

What is the sunniest time of year in Johannesburg?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Johannesburg is the dry winter and early-spring stretch from May to August, when the city records its longest, clearest days. In 2025, May was the single sunniest month with **315.3 hours of sunshine**, averaging about 10.2 hours of sun per day.

Johannesburg sits at roughly 1,645 m (5,395 ft) elevation, and its winter months bring crisp, cloudless skies. The meteorological winter of 2025 (June to August) delivered **872.6 hours of sunshine** in total, or roughly 9.5 hours per day. August followed close behind May with 307.1 hours, while June, the driest month of the year at just 0.9 mm (0.04 in) of rain, recorded 295.0 hours.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Johannesburg accumulated **3,035.3 hours of sunshine**, an average of about 8.3 hours per day. The cloudiest stretch came during the wet summer: February was the gloomiest month with only 182.2 hours (about 6.5 hours per day), paired with heavy rainfall of 257.8 mm (10.1 in).

For visitors, this makes Johannesburg's winter and early spring ideal for outdoor sightseeing, hiking, and game-viewing day trips. Daytime conditions are bright and dry, though winter mornings are chilly, with June averaging 9.9 °C (49.8 °F). If maximum sunshine with minimal rain is the goal, the May-to-August window in Johannesburg is the clear standout.

Question 4

What is the weather like in Johannesburg in July?

Accepted Answer

July is the heart of winter in Johannesburg, bringing cold, mostly dry, and exceptionally sunny days. In July 2025 the city averaged a mean temperature of 10.3°C (50.6°F), making it one of the coldest months of the year.

Daytime highs in Johannesburg stayed mild and comfortable, averaging 17.4°C (63.3°F), while nights turned sharply cold with an average low of 3.9°C (39.0°F). On three nights the temperature dipped below freezing, and the coldest reading of the month was -1.0°C (30.2°F) on 5 July 2025. The warmest afternoon reached 20.9°C (69.6°F) on 18 July.

Although July is normally one of Johannesburg's driest months, 2025 was unusually wet, recording 129.3mm (5.09 in) of rainfall. Most of this fell during a single unseasonal storm on 4 July that dropped 86.6mm (3.41 in). Even so, the month stayed dry overall, with 20 of 31 days seeing no rain at all and only 7 days receiving at least 1mm. Sunshine was abundant at roughly 8.7 hours per day, and humidity averaged a low 54%.

For visitors, July in Johannesburg means crisp, sunny winter weather ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities by day, but you should pack warm layers for cold mornings and frosty nights. The combination of bright skies, low humidity, and minimal rain makes it a clear, comfortable time to explore the city, provided you are prepared for the chilly after-dark temperatures.

Question 5

How much does the temperature vary between day and night in Johannesburg?

Accepted Answer

Johannesburg experiences large swings between daytime warmth and nighttime cold, with the gap between the hottest afternoons and coldest nights averaging about **21°C (38°F)** across 2025. This wide variation is driven largely by the city's high elevation of roughly 1,645 m (5,400 ft), where thin, dry air heats up quickly by day and loses warmth rapidly after sunset.

The contrast is sharpest in the dry winter months. During winter 2025 (June to August), the spread between each month's warmest high and coldest low averaged around **24°C (44°F)**. August was the most extreme month, ranging from a high of 28.3°C (82.9°F) down to a low of 0.6°C (33.1°F) — a swing of nearly 28°C (50°F).

A few key data points from Johannesburg in 2025:

- **Warmest reading:** 32.6°C (90.7°F) in January
- **Coldest reading:** -2.7°C (27.1°F) in June
- **Smallest monthly swing:** about 17°C (31°F) in April, the most settled month

For visitors, this means Johannesburg's pleasant, sunny daytime conditions can give way to genuinely chilly evenings, especially in winter. Packing layers is essential year-round, as a warm afternoon in the high teens or twenties can quickly turn cold once the sun sets over the Highveld.
