Question 1

What was the wettest month in Cape Town in 2025?

Accepted Answer

July was by far the wettest month in Cape Town in 2025, delivering a remarkable 409.5mm (16.1 inches) of rain in a single month. This single month accounted for roughly 65% of Cape Town's entire annual rainfall.

Across all of 2025, Cape Town received 627.7mm (24.7 inches) of precipitation, and the winter months of June, July and August (the meteorological winter, June 1 to August 31) together produced about 451.4mm (17.8 inches) — nearly 72% of the yearly total. By contrast, the second-wettest month was September with just 45.0mm (1.8 inches), showing how exceptional July really was.

The wet season aligns with Cape Town's cool winter climate. July averaged only 12.2°C (54.0°F), with overnight lows dipping to around 2.8°C (37.0°F). The driest stretch fell in high summer, with January recording a mere 0.7mm (0.03 inches) of rain.

This pattern is typical of Cape Town's Mediterranean climate, where cold fronts sweeping in from the Atlantic concentrate rainfall in the winter half of the year. For travellers, the takeaway is clear: visiting in July 2025 meant packing serious rain gear, while the warm, dry summer months from November to February offered far more reliable outdoor conditions. Gardeners and water managers also benefit, as these intense winter downpours replenish the dams that supply the city through the long dry summer.

Question 2

Which months had the most sunshine in Cape Town in 2025?

Accepted Answer

December and November were the sunniest months in Cape Town in 2025, with December recording 393.5 hours of sunshine and November close behind at 382.1 hours. Both months averaged about 12.7 hours of sunshine per day, making late spring and early summer the brightest time of year in the city.

Cape Town enjoyed a remarkable 3,326 hours of sunshine across 2025, averaging roughly 277 hours per month. The top three sunniest months were:

- **December:** 393.5 hours (about 12.7 hours/day)
- **November:** 382.1 hours (about 12.7 hours/day)
- **January:** 342.1 hours (about 11.0 hours/day)

This sunshine peak lined up with warm, dry conditions. December averaged 22.0°C (71.6°F) and November 21.5°C (70.7°F), and both months saw very little rain — under 1mm fell in November 2025. By contrast, June was the dullest month with just 166.2 hours of sunshine, or about 5.5 hours per day.

For visitors and locals, the takeaway is clear: if you want the brightest, warmest weather in Cape Town, plan for the November-to-February window. These months combine long, sunny days with mild temperatures, ideal for beach trips, hiking Table Mountain, and outdoor dining. The wetter, cloudier stretch from May to August offers far fewer sunshine hours, so outdoor plans in those months are better kept flexible.

Question 3

What were the temperature extremes in Cape Town in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Cape Town's temperature extremes in 2025 ranged from a scorching high of **38.5°C (101.3°F)** on 19 March to a chilly low of **2.8°C (37.0°F)** on the night of 19 July, giving the city an annual temperature spread of 35.7°C (about 64°F).

Across the full calendar year (1 January to 31 December 2025), Cape Town recorded an average temperature of 18.0°C (64.4°F). The peak of summer heat actually arrived in late autumn-style spikes, but February was the warmest month on average at 22.5°C (72.5°F), while July sat at the cold end with a monthly mean of just 12.2°C (54.0°F).

Heat was a regular feature of the warmer half of the year: Cape Town saw 60 days where the maximum reached at least 30°C (86°F), and 20 of those days climbed to 35°C (95°F) or hotter. At the other extreme, July's coldest nights dipped toward 2.8°C (37.0°F), though daytime highs in the coolest month still averaged a mild 17.1°C (62.8°F).

These figures highlight Cape Town's Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cool, damp winters that rarely turn truly cold. For visitors, it means lightweight clothing and sun protection are essential from late spring through early autumn, while a warm layer for evenings is wise during the June–August winter, when frost-free but crisp mornings are the norm.

Question 4

Which months are the windiest in Cape Town?

Accepted Answer

The windiest months in Cape Town are November, December, and February, when the city's famous summer south-easterly wind — known locally as the "Cape Doctor" — is at its strongest. Based on 2025 weather data, average wind speeds peak in late spring and early summer.

In 2025, November was the windiest month in Cape Town, with average wind speeds of 14.3 km/h (8.9 mph). December followed closely at 13.7 km/h (8.5 mph), and February reached 13.3 km/h (8.3 mph). Across the breezy November-to-February period, winds averaged 13.3 km/h (8.3 mph).

By contrast, Cape Town's calmest conditions arrived in mid-winter. July 2025 was the quietest month at just 8.2 km/h (5.1 mph), and the meteorological winter months of June to August (JJA) averaged only 8.7 km/h (5.4 mph). Over the full year, the average wind speed in Cape Town was 10.6 km/h (6.6 mph).

These patterns have practical implications for planning a visit. The windy summer months coincide with warm, dry weather, so beachgoers and outdoor diners in Cape Town may want to seek sheltered, north-facing spots when the south-easter picks up. If calmer air is a priority — for example, for table-top photography of Table Mountain or gentle boat trips — the winter months from June to August offer noticeably lighter winds, albeit with cooler temperatures.

Question 5

What is the weather like in Cape Town in December?

Accepted Answer

December is one of the warmest, sunniest, and driest months to visit Cape Town, sitting right in the heart of the Southern Hemisphere summer. In December 2025, the city averaged a comfortable 22.0°C (71.6°F), making it ideal for beach days and outdoor sightseeing.

Daytime heat could peak strongly, with December 2025 reaching a high of 37.4°C (99.3°F), while nights stayed mild, dipping to a low of 11.4°C (52.5°F). Sunshine was the standout feature: Cape Town recorded 393.5 hours of sunshine in December 2025, the most of any month that year, averaging roughly 12.7 hours of sun per day.

Rainfall was light, with just 26.6mm (1.05in) of precipitation across the month, and average humidity stayed moderate at 62.8%. One thing to plan for is the wind — December averaged 13.7 km/h (8.5 mph), reflecting the brisk summer "Cape Doctor" breezes that are typical of this time of year.

For travelers, these conditions make December an excellent time to experience Cape Town. The long daylight hours and dry, warm weather suit hiking Table Mountain, exploring the coastline, and enjoying the city's outdoor dining scene. Just pack a light layer for cooler evenings and be ready for the occasional gusty afternoon along the coast.
