Question 1

Which months have the most sunshine in Stockholm?

Accepted Answer

Stockholm gets the most sunshine in summer, with **August 2025 the sunniest month at 309.8 hours** — about 10 hours of sun per day. The city's high northern latitude means sunlight is heavily concentrated in the warmer half of the year.

In 2025, the three brightest months in Stockholm were all in summer:

- **August:** 309.8 hours of sunshine, with a mean temperature of 15.5°C (59.9°F) and highs reaching 26.5°C (79.7°F)
- **July:** 292.1 hours, the warmest month at 18.6°C (65.5°F) on average
- **June:** 285.6 hours, mean temperature 14.9°C (58.8°F)

Together these summer months (June–August) delivered 887.5 hours of sunshine — roughly 43% of Stockholm's annual total of 2,042.7 hours. The spring months also performed strongly, with May recording 234.7 hours and April 202.0 hours.

The contrast with winter is dramatic. December was the darkest month with just 48.8 hours of sunshine (about 1.6 hours per day), closely followed by November at 49.2 hours. That makes a typical August day in Stockholm more than six times sunnier than a December one.

If you're planning a visit to Stockholm for long, bright days, the late-spring-to-late-summer window from May through August offers by far the best combination of sunshine and mild temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor dining, archipelago boat trips, and exploring the city on foot.

Question 2

What were the temperature extremes in Stockholm in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Stockholm's temperature in 2025 swung from a frigid low of **-12.7°C (9.1°F)** in January to a warm high of **27.9°C (82.2°F)** in July, giving the city an annual range of 40.6°C (73.1°F).

The coldest conditions arrived early in the year. January 2025 produced the deepest cold of -12.7°C (9.1°F), while February was the coldest month overall, averaging -1.5°C (29.3°F). At the other end, July 2025 delivered both the hottest day at 27.9°C (82.2°F) and the warmest monthly average of 18.6°C (65.5°F). Across the full calendar year, Stockholm's mean temperature settled at 8.0°C (46.4°F).

This wide span is typical of Stockholm's location near the Baltic coast, where short, cool winters meet mild summers. The roughly 40°C (72°F+) gap between the year's coldest and warmest readings means visitors should pack very differently depending on the season.

For practical planning, the deep-freeze risk in Stockholm is concentrated in January and February 2025, when sub-zero days were common, so warm layers and proper footwear are essential. Summer travelers, by contrast, enjoyed pleasant peaks near 28°C (82°F) in July, ideal for waterfront walks and outdoor dining without the extreme heat seen further south in Europe. Overall, 2025 confirms Stockholm as a destination of strong seasonal contrast rather than weather extremes.

Question 3

How much rainfall did Stockholm get in 2025, and which season was wettest?

Accepted Answer

Stockholm received about **364 mm (14.3 inches)** of total precipitation in 2025, and summer was clearly the wettest season of the year.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, rainfall in Stockholm averaged roughly 30 mm (1.2 inches) per month, but it was far from evenly spread. Meteorological summer (June to August) delivered the heaviest totals at 153 mm (6.0 inches), accounting for more than 40% of the entire year's precipitation. July alone was the single wettest month with 91.8 mm (3.6 inches), nearly triple the monthly average.

The other seasons were noticeably drier. Autumn (September to November) saw 98 mm (3.9 inches), while spring (March to May) was the driest stretch at just 41 mm (1.6 inches). The January–February portion of winter 2024/25 added 42 mm (1.7 inches). March was the driest individual month of 2025 in Stockholm, with only 6.6 mm (0.26 inches).

For visitors and residents, these 2025 figures show that Stockholm's wet weather is concentrated in the warm summer months, often arriving as heavy showers or thunderstorms rather than steady rain. If you are planning outdoor activities and want the lowest chance of rain, the spring months of March through May offered the most reliably dry conditions in Stockholm during 2025, while a packable rain jacket is wise for any midsummer visit.

Question 4

How windy is Stockholm, and which months are the windiest in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Stockholm is a moderately breezy city, averaging wind speeds of 13.0 km/h (8.1 mph) across 2025, with the windiest conditions concentrated in the winter and early spring months.

The windiest month in Stockholm during 2025 was January, with average wind speeds of 15.4 km/h (9.6 mph). Late autumn and winter stayed consistently breezy too, as December averaged 14.8 km/h (9.2 mph). The calmest month was February at just 10.9 km/h (6.8 mph), closely followed by July at 11.0 km/h (6.8 mph).

Looking at the broader pattern in 2025:

- **Windiest period:** Winter (December 2025, January & February 2025) averaged 13.7 km/h (8.5 mph)
- **Calmer period:** Summer (June to August 2025) averaged 12.8 km/h (7.9 mph)
- **Annual average:** 13.0 km/h (8.1 mph)

In practical terms, Stockholm rarely sees extreme winds, and even the breeziest months stay in the light-to-moderate range on the Beaufort scale. The gentler conditions of mid-to-late summer make July and August in Stockholm especially pleasant for sailing the archipelago, cycling, or outdoor dining, while winter visitors should pack a windproof layer to offset the added chill from January's stronger gusts.

Question 5

When does spring really start in Stockholm?

Accepted Answer

In Stockholm, the real arrival of spring in 2025 came in mid-April, even though the calendar's meteorological spring (March 1 to May 31) begins earlier. Using a sustained 7-day average above 5°C (41°F) as the marker, settled spring warmth took hold around **April 13, 2025**.

The thaw, however, was clearly underway during March. Stockholm's monthly average temperature jumped from −1.5°C (29.3°F) in February to 3.7°C (38.7°F) in March, then climbed to 7.0°C (44.6°F) in April and 9.2°C (48.6°F) in May.

A few data points capture how quickly winter loosened its grip:

- In February, only 8 of 28 days stayed above freezing, while in March 27 of 31 days did.
- Stockholm's first mild day arrived on March 5, when the daytime high reached 10.6°C (51.1°F), and March peaked at 13.4°C (56.1°F).
- The last spring frost fell on May 5, with an overnight low of −1.3°C (29.7°F).

For visitors and locals planning outdoor time, this means March in Stockholm feels like an unpredictable transition with crisp, frost-prone nights, while April brings the first dependable run of mild days. By May, spring is firmly established, making late April and May the most reliable window for enjoying the city's parks and waterfront in comfortable conditions.
