Question 1

Which months had the most sunshine in Zurich in 2025?

Accepted Answer

June was the sunniest month in Zurich in 2025, recording 371.6 hours of sunshine — an average of about 12.4 hours per day. The summer months clearly dominated, making them the brightest stretch of the year.

After June, the sunniest months in Zurich were August with 344.4 hours and July with 284.8 hours. Together, the meteorological summer (June to August 2025) delivered 1,000.8 hours of sunshine, accounting for roughly 41% of the city's annual total. Spring was bright too, with April reaching 280.5 hours and May 239.8 hours.

Across all of 2025, Zurich accumulated 2,462.5 hours of sunshine, averaging about 205 hours per month. The darkest month was February, with just 66.9 hours — only around 2.4 hours of sun per day, compared to June's 12.4. June's brightness paired with warm conditions as well, with a mean temperature of 21.4°C (70.5°F) and highs reaching 35.0°C (95.0°F).

For visitors and locals planning sun-dependent activities, late spring through summer is the clear window in Zurich. From April to August 2025, every month topped 235 hours of sunshine, ideal for lakeside outings, hiking, and outdoor dining. By contrast, the winter months of January, February, and December each stayed below 110 hours, so trips focused on sunshine are best scheduled well outside that period.

Question 2

Which season is the wettest in Zurich?

Accepted Answer

Autumn was the wettest season in Zurich in 2025, with the meteorological autumn months (September to November 2025) delivering 584.7 mm (23.0 in) of precipitation — more than any other season.

By comparison, summer 2025 (June to August) recorded 468.9 mm (18.5 in), while spring 2025 (March to May) was the driest of the warmer seasons at just 284.2 mm (11.2 in). Across the full year, Zurich received 1,696.9 mm (66.8 in) of total precipitation in 2025.

The autumn peak was driven largely by a very wet October 2025, which alone brought 253.7 mm (10.0 in) of rain. November added 174.8 mm (6.9 in) and September 156.2 mm (6.1 in), keeping conditions consistently damp through the season.

For anyone planning a visit to Zurich, this means autumn is the season most likely to require an umbrella and waterproof layers, with frequent rain spells rather than dry, settled spells. Spring is a safer bet for drier weather, while the city's wettest single stretches tend to cluster in the September–November window. These 2025 figures reflect a typical pattern for Zurich, where autumn rainfall regularly outpaces the lighter precipitation of spring.

Question 3

What were the temperature extremes in Zurich in 2025?

Accepted Answer

At the other extreme, the coldest night of the year fell on 23 November 2025 at -9.2°C (15.4°F), edging out the deep cold of mid-January. Across the full year, Zurich's daily mean temperature averaged 10.8°C (51.5°F).

These extremes were far from isolated events. In 2025 Zurich recorded:

- **77 frost nights** dropping to 0°C (32°F) or below, including 2 full ice days where the temperature never rose above freezing

For visitors and residents, this wide annual range means packing for genuine extremes in Zurich: lightweight, breathable clothing and sun protection for the intense summer heat, and proper winter layers from late autumn onward. The last spring frost lingered until 8 April 2025, while the first autumn frost arrived on 18 November, leaving a frost-free growing season of just over seven months.

Question 4

What is the weather like in Zurich in December?

Accepted Answer

December in Zurich is cold, damp, and largely dry underfoot, with an average temperature of just 2.5°C (36.5°F) based on 2025 data. It's a classic Central European winter month — chilly days, frosty nights, and low winter sun.

Across December 2025, daily highs in Zurich averaged 5.3°C (41.6°F) while overnight lows hovered right at freezing at 0.1°C (32.3°F). The month covered a wide swing: the mildest afternoon reached 13.1°C (55.6°F) on December 8, and the coldest night plunged to −7.4°C (18.7°F) on December 31 as a cold snap closed out the year. Frost was frequent, with 15 nights dropping below freezing.

Precipitation was modest. Zurich recorded just 27.4 mm (1.08 in) of total precipitation over the month, spread across only 8 days with measurable rain or snow. Sunshine stayed limited, as expected mid-winter, totalling 90.4 hours — roughly 2.9 hours of sun per day — under persistently high humidity averaging 91.7%.

For visitors, December in Zurich means packing for genuine winter: a warm coat, gloves, and waterproof shoes for occasional damp days and icy mornings. The mostly dry, crisp conditions and festive atmosphere make it well suited to Christmas markets and city strolls, though short daylight and frequent frost mean outdoor plans are best scheduled around the brief midday sun.

Accepted Answer

Zurich had an average summer temperature of **20.4°C (68.8°F)** across meteorological summer 2025 (June 1 to August 31), making for a mild, pleasant season punctuated by a few intense heat spikes.

Despite those moderate monthly averages, Zurich still saw genuine heat: daytime highs peaked at 35.0°C (95.0°F) during both June and August. At the other end, the coolest summer night dropped to 8.4°C (47.1°F) in June, a reminder that early-summer evenings near the lake can still feel fresh.

For visitors, these 2025 figures mean Zurich's summer was comfortable rather than scorching, ideal for lakeside walks, swimming at Zürichsee, and outdoor dining. Just pack a light layer for cooler nights and an umbrella, since frequent rain — especially in July — was a defining feature of the season.
