Question 1

What were the temperature extremes in Ankara in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Ankara swung between a scorching 40.9°C (105.6°F) and a bitter −13.6°C (7.5°F) in 2025, giving the Turkish capital an exceptionally wide annual temperature range of about 54.5°C (98.1°F).

The hottest day of 2025 fell on 28 July, when the daytime high in Ankara peaked at 40.9°C (105.6°F) during a late-July heatwave. The coldest reading came on 23 February, when the overnight low plunged to −13.6°C (7.5°F) in the depths of winter 2024/25 (December 2024 to February 2025). This huge spread reflects Ankara's high-altitude, continental climate, sitting on the Anatolian plateau at roughly 877 metres (2,877 feet).

These extremes were anchored by clear seasonal patterns. July 2025 was the warmest month with an average temperature of 25.6°C (78.1°F), while February 2025 was the coldest at −0.5°C (31.1°F). Across the full year, Ankara's mean temperature settled at 12.8°C (55.0°F).

For visitors, this means packing for genuinely different climates depending on the season. Summer trips to Ankara call for lightweight clothing, sun protection and plenty of water, as midsummer afternoons can exceed 40°C (104°F). Winter visits, by contrast, demand warm layers, since nighttime temperatures in Ankara regularly fall below freezing and can briefly approach −14°C (7°F). Spring and autumn offer the gentlest middle ground between these two 2025 extremes.

Question 2

What is the sunniest time of year in Ankara?

Accepted Answer

Summer is by far the sunniest time of year in Ankara, with the peak of the season falling in July 2025. During the meteorological summer (June to August 2025), Ankara basked in roughly 13.5 hours of sunshine per day, dwarfing every other part of the year.

July 2025 was the single sunniest month, recording 434.4 hours of sunshine — an average of about 14 hours per day. June and August followed closely with 401.0 and 410.9 hours respectively, giving the summer season a combined 1,246 hours of sunshine. These bright months were also dry, with the three summer months together receiving just 30.8 mm (1.21 inches) of rain.

The contrast with winter is dramatic. The dimmest month of 2025 was February at only 126.2 hours of sunshine (around 4.4 hours per day), while January managed 130.6 hours. Across the full year, Ankara accumulated an impressive 3,204 hours of sunshine in 2025.

For anyone planning a trip, this makes the summer months the clear choice for reliably sunny, rain-free skies in Ankara. Daytime warmth in July averaged 25.6°C (78.1°F), so long, bright days are paired with comfortable, dry continental heat — ideal for sightseeing, outdoor dining, and exploring the city. If you prefer strong sun with milder temperatures, late spring and early autumn also deliver generous sunshine without the peak summer heat.

Question 3

Which season is the wettest in Ankara?

Accepted Answer

Autumn is the wettest season in Ankara, with the months of September to November 2025 (the meteorological autumn, or SON) delivering 143.5 mm (5.6 in) of precipitation — more than any other season of the year.

Most of that autumn rainfall arrived in a single month: October 2025 was the wettest month of the year in Ankara with 95.8 mm (3.8 in), accounting for roughly two-thirds of the season's total. By comparison, spring (March to May 2025) was the second-wettest season at 106.5 mm (4.2 in), boosted by a notably rainy April. The driest stretch was summer (June to August 2025), which saw just 30.8 mm (1.2 in) across all three months combined.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Ankara recorded about 356.6 mm (14.0 in) of total precipitation, confirming the city's relatively dry, semi-arid continental climate. Autumn alone accounted for around 40% of that annual total.

For visitors and residents, this means early autumn in Ankara still offers pleasant, mild conditions, but October is the month most likely to bring sustained rain — worth packing an umbrella and a light jacket. If you are planning outdoor activities and want the lowest chance of rain, the summer months of June through August are by far the driest time to be in Ankara.

Question 4

How cold does Ankara get in January?

Accepted Answer

Ankara gets genuinely cold in January, with freezing nights the norm rather than the exception. In January 2025, the city averaged just 3.3°C (38.0°F), making it the heart of the continental winter on the Anatolian plateau.

The cold is driven by Ankara's high elevation of 877m, which allows temperatures to plunge after sunset. During January 2025, daily highs averaged a chilly 9.3°C (48.7°F), but overnight lows fell to an average of -1.3°C (29.7°F). The temperature dipped below freezing on 21 of the month's 31 nights.

The standout cold figures from January 2025 in Ankara were:

- **Coldest night:** -6.1°C (21.0°F) on January 3
- **Warmest afternoon:** 12.7°C (54.9°F) on January 13
- **Average humidity:** a damp 84.4%, which makes the chill feel sharper

Precipitation was modest, with just 16.7mm (0.66 in) recorded across the month, so the cold tended to be dry and crisp rather than persistently wet.

For travelers, this means a visit to Ankara in January calls for serious winter clothing: insulated coats, hats, and gloves are essential, especially for early mornings and evenings when temperatures sit near or below freezing. The wide daily swing between the -1.3°C average low and 9.3°C average high also means afternoons can feel comparatively mild and pleasant for sightseeing, even as the nights remain firmly cold.

Question 5

What is the best time of year for outdoor activities in Ankara?

Accepted Answer

The best times for outdoor activities in Ankara are **late spring (May)** and **early autumn (September)**, when 2025 data shows comfortable temperatures, low rainfall, and plenty of sunshine without the punishing midsummer heat.

In May 2025, Ankara averaged 16.5°C (61.7°F) with around 298 sunshine hours and just 26.4mm (1.04in) of rain. September was similar, averaging 18.1°C (64.6°F), 327 sunshine hours, and only 9.3mm (0.37in) of precipitation. Both months stayed mild while delivering long, dry, sunny days — ideal for hiking, sightseeing, and exploring Ankara's parks.

By contrast, the peak summer months are intensely hot. July 2025 reached a high of 40.9°C (105.6°F) and averaged 25.6°C (78.1°F), making strenuous daytime activity uncomfortable. The shoulder months sidestep this extreme while still offering reliable weather.

A few practical notes for Ankara:

- **May:** Warm and green, but pack a light layer — nights still dipped to 1.3°C (34.3°F) in 2025.
- **June:** The driest month of 2025 (3.4mm / 0.13in), great for activities if you can handle highs near 35°C (95°F).
- **September:** Arguably the all-round best, balancing warmth, low rain, and cooler, pleasant afternoons.

Avoid October and April for sustained outdoor plans, as these were the wettest months in 2025, with 95.8mm and 73.9mm of rain respectively. Overall, plan your Ankara adventures for May or September to enjoy the city's most stable and inviting conditions.
