Question 1

What is the sunniest time of year in Istanbul?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in Istanbul is the summer, with **July 2025** being the brightest month of all, recording about 431 hours of sunshine — roughly 13.9 hours of sun per day.

Across the meteorological summer of 2025 (June 1 to August 31), Istanbul soaked up around 1,206 sunshine hours, or about 13.1 hours per day. That single three-month stretch delivered roughly 40% of the city's entire 2025 total of 2,982 sunshine hours, making it by far the brightest season. The peak month, July 2025, was also nearly bone-dry, with just 0.1mm of rain, while temperatures averaged 25.4°C (77.7°F) and climbed to a high of 37.4°C (99.3°F).

By contrast, the gloomiest stretch of the year in Istanbul fell in mid-winter: February 2025 saw only about 91 sunshine hours, less than a quarter of July's figure.

For visitors, this means late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable sunshine in Istanbul. June, July, and August each topped 380 hours, so anyone planning outdoor sightseeing, Bosphorus boat trips, or rooftop dining will find the longest, clearest days during these months. Just be prepared for genuine summer heat — July highs near 37°C (99°F) make midday shade and hydration worthwhile, while the warm, dry evenings stay pleasant well after sunset.

Question 2

Which season is the wettest in Istanbul?

Accepted Answer

Autumn is the wettest season in Istanbul, with the city recording about 320.5 mm (12.6 in) of rainfall during meteorological autumn 2025 (September 1 to November 30) — roughly 40% of the entire year's precipitation.

This made autumn far wetter than any other season in Istanbul. For comparison, the 2025 data shows:

- **Autumn (Sep–Nov):** 320.5 mm (12.6 in)
- **Winter (Jan–Feb 2025):** 205.4 mm (8.1 in)
- **Spring (Mar–May):** 143.8 mm (5.7 in)
- **Summer (Jun–Aug):** just 7.2 mm (0.3 in)

The autumn total was dominated by October, which alone delivered 227.5 mm (9.0 in) of rain — the wettest single month of the year. Despite the heavy rainfall, October stayed mild in Istanbul, averaging 15.7°C (60.3°F), so the season is more about persistent wet spells than cold.

Across all of 2025, Istanbul received roughly 800.7 mm (31.5 in) of precipitation. The contrast with summer is striking: June and July each saw barely measurable rain (0.1 mm), making the dry warm months the polar opposite of the soggy autumn.

For visitors, this means autumn trips to Istanbul should include rain gear and flexible indoor plans, especially in October. If staying dry is the priority, the summer months offer the most reliable conditions, while spring provides a balanced mix of moderate rainfall and comfortable temperatures.

Question 3

How hot does Istanbul get in summer?

Accepted Answer

Istanbul gets warm but rarely extreme in summer, with average daily highs around 28.8°C (83.8°F) during the meteorological summer of 2025 (June 1 to August 31). The season averaged a comfortable 24.0°C (75.2°F) overall, with nighttime lows easing back to about 19.3°C (66.8°F).

Heat in Istanbul peaks in mid-summer. Across the 2025 season, the city recorded 25 days that reached 30°C (86°F) or higher, but only 2 days climbed to 35°C (95°F) or above. The hottest day was July 23, 2025, when the temperature spiked to 37.4°C (99.3°F).

July was clearly the warmest stretch, averaging daily highs of 30.6°C (87.1°F), compared with 27.5°C (81.5°F) in June and 28.2°C (82.8°F) in August. Humidity averaged a moderate 64.9% over the season, and the warmest night dipped no lower than 24.3°C (75.7°F), which can make the most intense days feel muggy near the water.

For visitors, this means Istanbul summers are generally pleasant for sightseeing rather than punishing. Mornings and evenings stay mild, and true heatwave days are short-lived. If you prefer to avoid the warmest conditions, late June or the second half of August offer slightly cooler highs than the mid-July peak, making them good windows for walking tours and outdoor dining across the city.

Question 4

What is the annual temperature range in Istanbul?

Accepted Answer

Istanbul has a wide annual temperature range, swinging roughly 41.7°C (75°F) from its coldest winter night to its hottest summer afternoon. In 2025, temperatures spanned from a low of **-4.3°C (24.3°F)** in February to a high of **37.4°C (99.3°F)** in July.

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Istanbul averaged **15.2°C (59.4°F)**. February was the coolest month, with a mean temperature of just 4.4°C (39.9°F), while July was the warmest at 25.4°C (77.7°F). That gives a month-to-month spread of about 21°C (38°F) between the warmest and coolest parts of the year.

The seasons in Istanbul are clearly defined:

- **Winter (Dec 2024–Feb 2025 portion):** January and February 2025 saw nighttime lows dip below freezing, down to -4.3°C (24.3°F).
- **Summer (June–August 2025):** Daytime highs regularly climbed into the low-to-mid 30s°C, peaking at 37.4°C (99.3°F).
- **Spring and autumn:** Mild transitional months, with mean temperatures between roughly 10°C and 16°C (50–61°F).

This broad temperature range means visitors to Istanbul should pack very differently depending on the season. A warm coat is essential for the cold, sometimes sub-zero winter nights, while lightweight, breathable clothing is best for the hot, humid summer days. The mild spring and autumn months offer the most comfortable conditions for sightseeing across the city.

Question 5

What is the weather like in Istanbul in January?

Accepted Answer

Istanbul in January is cool, damp, and often rainy, with a mild maritime character that keeps hard frost rare. In January 2025, the city averaged 8.0°C (46.5°F), making it one of the coldest months of the year but still well above freezing on most days.

Daytime highs in Istanbul typically reached around 10.9°C (51.7°F), while nights cooled to about 5.0°C (41.1°F). The warmest afternoon climbed to 14.6°C (58.3°F) on January 8, and the coldest night dipped to just -1.2°C (29.8°F) on January 18 — the only sub-zero reading of the month.

January was also a wet month in Istanbul. Key precipitation figures for January 2025 include:

- **76.4 mm (3.01 in)** of total rainfall
- **9 days** with measurable precipitation
- A wettest day of **21.1 mm** on January 13

Humidity stayed high throughout, averaging 84%, and winds were light to moderate at about 13.4 km/h (8.3 mph), occasionally gusting stronger during passing storms mid-month.

For visitors, January in Istanbul means packing a warm waterproof jacket and an umbrella. While snow is uncommon at the city's low elevation (around 56 m / 184 ft), the combination of cool temperatures, frequent rain, and high humidity can feel raw. The upside is far thinner crowds at landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and Grand Bazaar, making it a good choice for budget-minded sightseeing if you don't mind the damp winter weather.
