Question 1

What were the temperature extremes in Boston in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Boston swung through a wide temperature range in 2025, from a peak of **36.4°C (97.5°F)** in June down to a low of **-15.2°C (4.6°F)** in January. That gives the city an annual spread of roughly 51.6°C (about 93°F) between its hottest and coldest readings.

The warmest stretch of 2025 came in summer, with July posting the highest monthly average at 23.4°C (74.1°F). June, however, delivered the single hottest spike of the year at 36.4°C (97.5°F), edging past July's 35.2°C (95.4°F) high. At the other end, the deep cold settled in early: January was both the coldest month overall, averaging -2.5°C (27.5°F), and home to the year's lowest temperature at -15.2°C (4.6°F).

Across the full year, Boston averaged 10.1°C (50.2°F), reflecting its classic four-season continental climate. Spring and autumn acted as transition zones, with April lows still dipping to -3.2°C (26.2°F) and October highs reaching a mild 27.4°C (81.3°F).

For visitors, these 2025 extremes are a reminder to pack for the season: summer trips can bring genuine heat near 36°C (97°F), so light clothing and hydration matter, while winter demands serious cold-weather gear for sub -15°C (5°F) nights. The shoulder months of spring and fall offer Boston's most comfortable and stable temperatures for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Question 2

How much rainfall did Boston get in 2025, and which months were the wettest?

Accepted Answer

Boston recorded approximately 1,376.6 mm (54.2 inches) of total precipitation across 2025, with spring standing out as by far the wettest stretch of the year.

Rainfall in Boston was spread fairly evenly month to month, averaging about 114.7 mm (4.5 inches) per month, but a few months pushed well above that line. May 2025 was the single wettest month at 216.0 mm (8.5 inches), followed by March with 160.9 mm (6.3 inches) and April with 145.1 mm (5.7 inches). At the other end, June 2025 was the driest month, receiving just 56.7 mm (2.2 inches).

Grouping the data by meteorological season shows a clear pattern in Boston's 2025 climate:

- **Spring (March–May):** 522.0 mm (20.6 inches) — the wettest season
- **Autumn (September–November):** 295.9 mm (11.6 inches)
- **Summer (June–August):** 242.8 mm (9.6 inches)
- **Winter (January–February):** 213.4 mm (8.4 inches)

For visitors and residents, this means Boston's spring carried the heaviest and most persistent rainfall in 2025, so a waterproof jacket and umbrella were essentials from March through May. Early summer offered the driest, most reliable conditions for outdoor plans, with June seeing less than a third of May's rainfall. Overall, the steady year-round precipitation in Boston kept the city green but rarely left it bone-dry in any single month.

Question 3

Which months were the sunniest in Boston in 2025?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest months in Boston in 2025 were August and July, with August leading the year at 381.2 hours of sunshine (about 12.3 hours per day) and July close behind at 364.5 hours (around 11.8 hours per day).

Across the full 2025 calendar year, Boston recorded 2,806.5 total sunshine hours, averaging roughly 7.7 hours of sun per day. The late-summer stretch was by far the brightest: September added another 302.6 hours, and the meteorological summer (June to August) alone delivered 1,008.8 hours — close to 36% of the city's entire annual sunshine.

At the other end of the scale, the darkest months were February with just 155.7 hours (about 5.6 hours per day), followed closely by November at 159.3 hours and December at 160.2 hours. These sun-poor months also ran cold, with February averaging -1.7°C (28.9°F) compared with July's mild 23.4°C (74.1°F).

For anyone planning outdoor activities, these 2025 figures confirm that July through September is the prime window for reliable sunshine in Boston, combining long, bright days with warm temperatures. If you prefer to avoid the gloomiest, low-light stretch, the November-to-February period offers the fewest sunny hours and the coolest conditions in the city.

Question 4

Which months were the windiest in Boston in 2025?

Accepted Answer

December was the windiest month in Boston in 2025, with average wind speeds of 17.5 km/h (10.9 mph), narrowly ahead of January at 17.3 km/h (10.7 mph). The breeziest conditions clustered in the colder, transitional parts of the year rather than the summer.

Across 2025, Boston's monthly average wind speed was 15.3 km/h (9.5 mph). The top three windiest months were December (17.5 km/h / 10.9 mph), January (17.3 km/h / 10.7 mph), and April (17.0 km/h / 10.6 mph). At the other end of the scale, September was the calmest month at just 11.2 km/h (7.0 mph), followed by August at 12.2 km/h (7.6 mph).

Grouped by meteorological season, the winter months within 2025 (January, February, and December 2025) averaged 17.0 km/h (10.5 mph), the windiest season overall. Summer (June to August) was the calmest at 13.1 km/h (8.2 mph), making the late-summer-to-early-autumn stretch the gentlest time for wind.

For visitors and residents, this means Boston's winter and early-spring weather brings noticeably gustier conditions, worth factoring in for harbor walks, commuting, and wind chill. If you prefer calm, still air, late summer and September offer Boston's most settled winds of the year, with September wind speeds roughly 36% lower than December's.

Just pack a light rain jacket and stay hydrated on the hottest days, as Boston's July weather mixes heat, humidity, and the occasional summer downpour.
