Question 1

What is the sunniest time of year in New York?

Accepted Answer

The sunniest time of year in New York is summer, with August 2025 ranking as the brightest month of the entire year. Late summer delivers by far the most sunshine, making it the peak season for soaking up clear skies in the city.

Based on 2025 weather data, New York recorded its highest sunshine totals in August with 368.1 hours, followed by July with 334.3 hours. That works out to roughly 11.9 hours of sunshine per day in August and 10.8 hours per day in July. September stayed bright too at 286.1 hours, while the three summer months (June–August) together accounted for about 945 hours — around 35% of the city's full-year total of 2,723.4 hours.

By contrast, the darkest stretch falls in winter: December 2025 saw just 150.6 hours of sunshine, or about 4.9 hours per day, with November close behind at 159.9 hours.

These long, bright summer days line up with New York's warmest temperatures, as August averaged 22.2°C (72.0°F) and July 25.9°C (78.6°F). If you are planning a trip to maximize clear skies and outdoor time in New York, July through September is the ideal window — though it pays to expect some summer humidity and the occasional thunderstorm alongside all that sunshine.

Question 2

What were the temperature extremes in New York in 2025?

Accepted Answer

New York swung between a scorching high of 40.8°C (105.4°F) and a bitter low of -15.7°C (3.7°F) in 2025, giving the city an annual temperature range of about 56.5°C (102°F).

The hottest day in New York came on June 24, 2025, when the temperature peaked at 40.8°C (105.4°F) and even the daily average reached 32.7°C (90.9°F). At the other end, the coldest night fell on January 22, 2025, when the low dropped to -15.7°C (3.7°F). Across the full year, New York averaged a mild 12.3°C (54.2°F).

Heat and cold were both frequent rather than one-off events in 2025:

- 53 days reached at least 30°C (86°F), including 27 days at or above 32.2°C (90°F)
- 105 days saw the temperature dip to freezing (0°C / 32°F) or below
- 8 nights fell to -10°C (14°F) or colder

These extremes show why New York demands a flexible wardrobe year-round. Summer 2025 brought genuine heatwave conditions where staying hydrated and seeking shade mattered, while the depth of winter called for serious cold-weather layers. For visitors, late spring and early autumn remain the safest bets to avoid both the peak heat and the hardest freezes that bookended New York's 2025.

Question 3

Which season is the wettest in New York?

Accepted Answer

Spring is the wettest season in New York, with the city recording 354.2 mm (13.9 in) of rainfall during spring 2025 (March 1 to May 31) — far more than any other season.

Across 2025, New York's precipitation was unevenly distributed by season:

- **Spring (MAM, Mar–May):** 354.2 mm (13.9 in)
- **Summer (JJA, Jun–Aug):** 257.4 mm (10.1 in)
- **Autumn (SON, Sep–Nov):** 212.4 mm (8.4 in)
- **Winter (Jan–Feb 2025):** 63.0 mm (2.5 in)

The single wettest month was March 2025, which alone delivered 136.0 mm (5.4 in) of rain, closely followed by May with 135.4 mm (5.3 in). Spring averaged roughly 118 mm (4.6 in) of precipitation per month, while the early-2025 winter months of January and February were strikingly dry by comparison.

In total, New York received 962.9 mm (37.9 in) of precipitation across 2025, meaning spring accounted for well over a third of the entire year's rainfall.

For visitors and residents, this means spring is the season to keep an umbrella handy in New York, with frequent wet spells from March through May. Summer remains fairly damp too, thanks to heavy July downpours, while late autumn and the first months of winter tend to be the driest stretches for outdoor plans.

Question 4

What is the weather like in New York in July?

Accepted Answer

New York is hot, humid, and largely sunny in July, with average daytime highs around 31.8°C (89.3°F) and warm nights that rarely dip below 20°C (68°F). July is firmly the peak of summer in the city.

Across July 2025, New York recorded a monthly mean temperature of 25.9°C (78.6°F), with average daily highs of 31.8°C (89.3°F) and average overnight lows of 20.8°C (69.4°F). The month delivered plenty of warmth and sunshine:

- **22 days** reached 30°C (86°F) or hotter, and **6 days** topped 35°C (95°F)
- The hottest day was July 29, 2025, peaking at **39.0°C (102.2°F)**
- Total sunshine reached **334 hours**, averaging about 10.8 hours per day

Rainfall in New York during July 2025 totaled **108.8 mm (4.28 inches)**, spread across roughly 12 days with measurable rain (1 mm or more). Much of this came in short, heavy summer downpours rather than steady all-day rain, with the wettest day delivering 22 mm. Humidity averaged a sticky 69.8%, making the heat feel more intense.

For travelers, July in New York means reliably warm, sunny weather ideal for parks, rooftops, and waterfront outings—but pack light, breathable clothing and plan for occasional afternoon thunderstorms. The combination of high heat and humidity also makes midday hydration and shade important during the hottest stretches.

Question 5

Which months are the windiest in New York?

Accepted Answer

The windiest months in New York are April, October, and December, which each averaged wind speeds of 16.2 km/h (10.1 mph) in 2025 — the highest of any month that year.

Across all of 2025, New York saw an average wind speed of 13.9 km/h (8.6 mph). The breeziest stretches came at the edges of the year: late autumn and early winter stayed consistently gusty, with November close behind the leaders at 15.7 km/h (9.8 mph). By contrast, September was the calmest month at just 10.7 km/h (6.6 mph), followed by the mid-summer lull of August at 12.0 km/h (7.5 mph).

Grouped by season, the pattern in 2025 was clear:

- **Spring (Mar–May):** 15.1 km/h (9.4 mph) — the windiest season
- **Autumn (Sep–Nov):** 14.2 km/h (8.8 mph)
- **Winter (Dec, Jan, Feb):** 13.8 km/h (8.6 mph)
- **Summer (Jun–Aug):** 12.3 km/h (7.6 mph) — the calmest

For visitors and residents, this means New York's spring and late-autumn days can feel noticeably blustery, so a windproof layer is worth packing for outdoor plans in April or October. If you prefer still, settled air for activities like rooftop dining or harbor sightseeing, the late-summer weeks around September offer New York's gentlest breezes of the year.
